The first mention of our familly coming to Union County (which was at that time part of Mechlenburg County) was 1808 when Cornelius Sykes, a decendent of John Sykes, purchased 50 acres of land in the district of Goose Creek Township, which became part of Union County in 1842. Cornelius' home was here as long as he lived. At his death, it became the home of his son Joshua III, who was born August 7, 1803 and died May 8, 1878. (I do not know what to make of this - I have Cornelius Sikes dead in 1804 in ,Sampson, NC - JEA)
