  Ernest joined the 13 th Hussars on 21 Oct 1896 in Canterbury Kent UK and was a Private ( Army No 3894 ). He was already serving in the Royal West Kent Regiment ( Militia Army No 4507 )
 At the time of his enlistment his height was 5 feet 5 and 7/8 inches , weighed 127 lbs ( 9 stone 1 lb ) , had brown hair , blue eyes , fresh complexion , and his chest was 34 inches Min and 35 and a half inches Max.
 On Sat. 10 Nov 1899 Ernest left Langton Dock Liverpool on Ss Templemore on route to South Africa ( Boer War ). He docked in Durban South Africa on Tues. 5 Dec 1899. On board were 22 Officers , 559 Men and 451 Troophorses.
 He was in the battles for Tugela Heights Jan 16th 1900 to Feb 8th 1900 , The Relief of Ladysmith upto Feb 28th 1900 , The Orange Free State in about 1901 and the Transvaal in about 1902.
 He was back in Aldershot England after Oct 1902.
 He transfered to the Army Reserve on 21st Oct 1903.
 He Re-enlisted in the 13th Hussars on 12th Dec 1908.
 He transfered to the Army Reserve on 12th Dec 1912.
  He was in Ypres Belgium ( WW 1 ) in Feb 1915 and was found unfit for duty on 26 July 1915 due to what we would now call shell shock.
