Note: N24 The photo shows “Uncle Rufus” standing on the top left. This photo is from a journal and collection of photos and articles posted online made by his brother, George Irvin Funk. An image of a journal record for the births of the Jacob Funk children gives “Jacob” as the middle name of Rufus. Entry in a journal kept by George Irvin Funk, the brother of Rufus has the following: Rufus E Funk My second brother was first married to Pearle Shearer at New Canton Illinois September 18th 1904 Pearl Shearer Funk died October 12th 1905 Rufus E Funk and Minnie Mabel Brewster were married at New Canton Illinois September 19th 1916 Rufus Funk was born Wednesday Feb. 5th 1873 My brother was named Rufus Jacob but not liking his name he changed it to Rufus Elmer (apparently Rufus tired of Elmer, and changed his middle name to Ernest, according to his draft registration; see below) ____________________________ From Quincy Il Middle name varies in the records, but WWI draft registration gives Ernest, 1880 - Rufus (7) is living with his parents and siblings in Mendon Twp., Adams Co., IL where his father, Jacob, is farming. 1910 Census - Rufus (36), widowed, is living in Pleasant Vale Township, Pike Co., IL, boarding, and working as an operator of a Railroad. WWI Draft registration Rufus Ernest Funk Permanent Home: New Canton, Pike, Ill age: 45 DOB: Feb 5th 1873 White Native Born Occupation: Retail Grocer Place of business: New Canton, Pike, Ill Nearest Relative: Minnie M Funk, wife Addr: New Canton, Pike, Ill 1920 Census - R. Rufus is a commercial salesman for a light plant 1930 Census - Rufus(57) and Minnie (60) are living on Hampshire St. in the town of Quincy, Adams Co., IL. The record shows Rufus was 23 years old when he first married, Minnie was 47, so this is a second marriage for Rufus. Rufus (57) is reported as a salesman of mining stock, but seems to have been unemployed at the time of the census, perhaps having lost his job in the depression. ________________________ Shearer Cemetery - Pleasant Vale Twp, Illinois - Funk, Elizabeth d. 17 Dept 1905 - infant dau of Rufus E. & Pearl H.
