The following identifies two bridges on Laughry Creek named for the Purcells. It could be the Stocktons and Purcells were neighbors and knew each other. PURCELL COVERED BRIDGE Pictures Info. Actually, there were 2 structures known as the Purcell Covered Bridge, neither of which is now standing. Both structures were built on the same site and crossed Laughery Creek in Section 1, Township 7 North, and Range 11 East, Ripley County. Though virtually no information is known about the specifics of the first Purcell Covered Bridge, in fact, it may not even have been covered. George Gould identified a World Guide number of 14-69-08 for it in his book "Indiana Covered Bridges Thru the Years," published in 1977 by the Indiana Covered Bridge Society, Inc. The second Purcell Covered Bridge was built in 1881 by Philip Ensminger. Utilizing a Howe Truss, the structure was 129 feet in long, or 135 feet including the 5-foot 6-inch overhang at each end, with a portal clearance 15 feet 6 inches wide by 13 feet high. The second Purcell Covered Bridge was listed as #14-69-05 in the World Guide (according to G. Gould's 1977 list) and was lost in 1957 ... In the February 1941 "Indiana History Bulletin" Robert B. Yule and Richard C. Smith assigned the designation "fe" to this Covered Timber Bridge located 1/2 miles northeast of Versailles. ________________________________ Aaron Purcell Born about 1804 in Simpson Creek, Nelson, Kentucky, USA ANCESTORS Son of Benjamin Purcell and Elizabeth Osburn Brother of Thomas Purcell, Samuel Purcell, Mariah Purcell, Benjamin Purcell, Lawrence Purcell, John Samuel Purcell, Moses Purcell, Sally Sarah Purcell and Elizabeth Purcell Husband of Maria Clement — married [date unknown] [location unknown] DESCENDANTS Father of Benjamin C. Purcell, Mahlon Purcell, Priscilla Purcell, Aberilla Purcell and Melvina Purcell Died about 1836 in Vermilion County, Illinois, USA Biography Aaron Purcell was born about 1804 in Simpson Creek, Nelson County, Kentucky. He is last child of Benjamin Purcell and Elizabeth Osburn. Aaron's family had already been scouting the Laughery Creek valley in Indiana when he was born. The family moved to a farm in Cesar Creek township on Laughery Creek when he was just a baby. Benjamin, Aaron's dad, died sometime before 1820 probably in Indiana. Aaron married Maria Clement around this same time. He and Maria likely remained on his family's farm and were listed with thier first child, Benjamin, in Laughery township in the 1820 census.[1] The family ultimately had seven children, 2 boys and 5 girls, all born in Indiana.[2] Aaron Purcell appears to have died some time around 1836, probably on the farm in Dearborn county, leaving a young family.
