Notes
a. Note:   N1111 Note: The 1905 S. Dakota state census original record says Willard (assuming it is our Willard) was in S. Dakota 29 years, and was 39 years old at the time. This would mean he was about 10 years old when he moved to S. Dakota with his father. Family records state that his father abandoned the family in 1776, so this suggest Willard went with his father and was born about 1865/6. This conflicts with the 1882 Army record below, and with the 1870 census in which he is listed as 18 years old, but it is very common for young men to lie about their age when they enlist, especially if they are under age.
1882 - U. S. Army Enlistments - Willard Rose enlisted Jan 18 in W. Meade D T (Dakota territory?) by W. McCormick, b. in Eau Clair, Wisconsin, age 21, farmer, eyes gray, hair lt, complexion lt, height 5 ft, 6 in.; 7 Cav; Co C ; Discharged Jun 12 1883 disability at Ft Meade D. T, a pvt, Char very good.
“In 1882, the 7th Cavalry headquarters were transferred to
Fort Meade, in present-day South Dakota.”

The following articles were found on newspapers.com. It may be about our Willard, or a different person. Deadwood is 15 miles from Fort Mead, SD.
1885 - July 15 - Black Hills Daily Times from Deadwood, South Dakota; pg 3 - “Will Rose, an inmate of the county escaped from custody at 8 o'clock evening, and at a late hour had not been recaptured. He was awaiting on the charge of stealing a span of horse at Brownsville, and for some time out had been employed In the kitchen, thereby securing greater liberty and the opportunity to flee, which he embraced last evening. A sheriff's posse promptly started in pursuit and recapture is only a question of time.”
1885 - July 18 - Black Hills Weekly Times from Deadwood, South Dakota - “Will Rose, an inmate of this county jail, escaped from custody at 8 o’clock last evening, and for some time past had been employed in the kitchen, thereby securing greater liberty and a recapture is only a question of time.”
1885 - August 5 - Black Hills Daily Times from Deadwood, South Dakota - “Willard Rose, who recently escaped from the Lawrence county jail, is again In custody at Cheyenne agency, where he was apprehended on information sent by Sheriff Garland. He will be returned by Deputy Btatts(?) Marshall Jackson.”
1885 - Sept 8 - Black Hills Dail Times from Deadwood, South Dakota; pg 4 - “Territory vs. Willard Rose, indicted far larceny. Case dismissed on motion of the district attorney.” ______
A Letter written by Willard’s father, John Carmichael Rose, in 1899 to daughter, Anna, from Montezuma, New Mexico has the following passage:
“ It was all on account of Will I did it or sold them. (John sold his cattle in the Dakota territory) I’m not afraid of his bothering me here ... he will never get money enough now to get here with.”
An odd thing for a father to write about his son, but in the divorce papers John’s wife described him as having an unpleasant disposition.

Note: Willard’s age recorded in the military record would make his birth year 1862. His age recorded in the 1905 S.D state census suggests his birth year was 1865/6. If he was indeed 39 in 1905 it could be his mother died in or near his childbirth. Lavinia died March 1865
It may be he lied about his age to get into the military, or one of the records is just wrong. I do feel that these records are for the same person.

Find-a-grave has an entry for Willard Rose, b. 1865, d. May 2, 1958 buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Lander, Fremont Co., Wyoming. I don’t know if this is our Willard, but the birth year is right, and the region of the country is consistent with S. Dakota. I’m fairly certain this is a different person. Given that WIllard was single, and a laborer, it seems unlikely he’d have lived to be 90+ years old.

South Dakota death index that covers the first half of the 1900’s has no entry for Willard Rose. The marriage index for SD also has no entry.
The 1910 Federal Census turns up nothing either.

Willard does not show up in the 1915 SD state census.

  1916 - 04 MAR - LEAD DAILY CALL (LEAD, SOUTH DAKOTA) - PAGE 1
  SUFFERED FOR WEEKS
WILLARD ROSE DIED AT ST. JOSEPH’S LAST EVENING
Willard Rose, aged 52, who was injured by a falling tree near Anton Schreiner’s ranch, this side of Sturgis, on Feb 11th, died at St. Joseph’s hospital at 5 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The remains were brought to the Rounsevell undertaking parlors in this city and an attempt is being made to locate three sisters, supposed to live in Minneapolis.
Rose was logging at the time of the accident and at 3 o’clock in the afternoon was pinned beneath a tree. He was not found until 8 o’clock that night. Mrs. Schreiner rode to Sturgis for medical aid, but could not obtain it, as the accident happened over the Lawrence county line. County Commissioner Ayres was notified and Dr. R. E. Holvey responded to the call. He brought the man to St. Joseph’s hospital where it was found his back was broken, his left hip fractured and his right thigh broken. He also sustained an injury to the chest.
