This might explain why the Walters (Alice McCray Walter) were in Portland in their early years.” - from letter written by John Merriell to Nancy Eberle 7 May 1984 1880 Census - Nellie (20) is living in Eau Claire, WI, with Rebecca Rose (35), her step mother, and half sisters Anna Rose (13), Della (11), and Katie (7). Nellie is reported to be a printer. 1881 - The following biographies are from "History of Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis [Minnesota]". By George E. Warner, in 1881. Only the biography sections and selected 'incidents' are included in this file. Eben E. Lawrence machinist at Anchor mill, was born at Cherryfield, Washington county, Maine, November 7th, 1847. He came to Minneapolis in April, 1870, and gave his attention to lumbering until the spring of 1877. He then engaged in the Pillsbury mill, remaining three years; then to the Anchor mill as machinist. While in the lumber business he passed several winters in the pineries, occupying positions as chopper and superintendent. 1885 Minneapolis, MN, city directory: Rose Nellie F; dressmaker b 408 S 7th (not certain this is the same person) 1895 - Minnesota Territorial and State Census - Lawrence, Eben E (46) b. Maine; miller Lawrence, Helen R (32) b. Wisc Lawrence, Helen M (18) b. Minn all are living at 1617 4th St E. On the same street are living Daniel Lawrence (74), Sophia (73) Abbie (80)(or (30) a dressmaker. Daniel is “hunting for work” 1905 Minnesota Census - Edwin (recorded incorrectly in original record) Lawrence (57), Helen R Lawrence (44), and Helen M Lawrence(17) are living in Luke City, Wabasha county, Minnesota. Eben (recorded as Edwin) is a miller; and was born in Maine, Helen R in Wisconsin and Helen M in Minnesota. 1910 Census shows Eben E Lawrence (62), Helen R Lawrence (42), and Helen (20) living in Minneapolis Ward 13, Hennepin, MN. Eben runs a flour mill. Helen was b. in WI, her parents were both born in NY. Eban and Helen R. have been married 22 years. Was 26 years old at the time of her first marriage. 1940 Census - Helen Lawrence (79) b. Wisconsin, married, living in an old folks home in Portland, Multnomah, Oregon. She was in the same house in 1935. 1940 - An online Oregon death index shows a Helen Lawrence died 1 Apr 1940. No other information is given.
