Feb 15, 1820, perhaps the source of the name Carlos “Carlos McCray, born at Ellington, Connecticut, June 23d, 1826 When a lad of twelve years, he accompanied his parents to Allegany county, New York, remaining six years, and during the time attended school. He engaged in farming in Walworth county, Wisconsin, from that time till 1854, then removed to Prescott, where his father died in 1872. Engaging in agricultural pursuits until 1861, he then embarked in the drug trade, and was also appointed postmaster. He was married in 1849 to Miss R. A. McKeen. They have five children living. “ “The mercantile interests of the city of Prescott are represented by the following firms, viz: John Dudley, E. A. Meacham and Son, John G. Theurer, Jacob Freese, general merchandise; N. S. Dunbar, groceries; McGill and Wilkinson, L. Jurgens, and W. Sesemann, boots and shoes; Carlos McCray, and E. R. Welch, drugs; C. McCray, books and stationery;” -From History of Washington County and the St. Croix Valley, Including the Explorers and Pioneers of Minnesota by Rev. Edward D. Neill and Outlines of the History of Minnesota by J. Fletcher Williams, Minneapolis: North Star Publishing Company, 1881 _________________ “In the files of the Probate Court, we found the probate papers of Carlos McCray, d. 20 Dec 1912. The executor of the estate, through his own petition, was William, although one of the hiers was Henry B. McCray of Prescott. All of the hiers were of Prescott (WI) except Alice M Walther, then (Jan 1913) of Berkeley, Calif. At the time of the final settlement, 15, Aug, 1914, Alice had moved to Santa Barbara. In 1913, as part of the estate probate, each of the heirs other than Mary Ellen sold their interest in McCray & Co. to her for $1.00. (One of the witnesses on this document was Florence L. McCray) We presumed that this was done because this was the only apparent source of support for Ellen with her father gone. However, we are a bit puzzled as to what Henry and William expected to do for a living, unless they planned to be employees of the Company with the company profits going to Ellen.” - from a letter written by John McCray Merriell to Nancy Eberle Aug 1984 - ___________ 1850 Census - Wm McCray (48), Candice (45), O T Maxom (26), Eunice Maxom (26), and Emeline Maxom (8), are living in Richmond, Walworth Co., WI.
