It isn’t known how his name was changed from Rank to Rand (his father’s name was “Rank”), but James Lindley Rand changed it back to Rank in 1930. However, his wife, Frances, continued to use “Rand”.

Johns Hopkins half-century directory: a catalogue of the trustees, faculty, holders of honorary degrees, and students, graduates and non-graduates, 1876-1926 gives both “Rand” and “Rank” as the last name for James Lindley. This provides a second documentation of the use of both spellings seen in the Brewster family bible.
“Rand, James Lindley (James Lindley Rank) [17-18, 19-20 AB] AM Columbia 22. MS and Proof Reader, Book Compilation. 85 Crooke Av Brooklyn NY.”
  1900 Census - Henry Rank (30), Mary J (29), James L (4) (b. Oct 1896), and Lawrence (2) (b. Apr 1898) are living in Lonaconing, Allegany, Maryland.
This may be our James L Rand, and it may be that he changed the last name from Rank to Rand and both spellings have appeared in family records. The Charles Ellis Brewster family bible has “Rand (rank)” for the last name for James Lindley Rand in the marriage entry for Frances Rachel Brewster.

An entry in a book about the Henry Clay Rank family had the following:
“James Lindley Rank is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University , Baltimore, Maryland, from which he took his degree of Bachelor of Arts, and he took his degree of Master of Arts from Columbia University, New York City. He enlisted in the World war in 1917, and was severely injured by a gunshot wound in the right lung during the Argonne offensive, September 27, 1918, from which he has never recovered.”
(from History of Allegany County, Maryland, by James Walter Thomas, Thomas John Chew Williamd, 1969, Regional Pub. Co. )
Henry Clay Rank had two sons, James Lindley Rank, and Lawrence H Rank. The above truncated entry in Google Books immediatel preceeds “Lawrence H Rank enlisted in the World war in 1917 and received his rank of second lieutenant...” I am assuming the entry for the wounded son is for James Lindely.

HENRY CLAY RANK - In the untimely death of Henry Clay Rank, at that time owner and editor of the Cumberland Independent, Allegany County, lost a citizen of extreme worth, and journalism and able and brilliant exponent. Few men of his years had made so marked an impression or were widely known in newspaper circles, and his vigorous editorials brought the journals, he owned and edited into deserved prominence. Had longer life been vouchsafed him his talents would undoubtedly have brought him to an eminent place in his profession.
Mr. Rank belonged to an old and substantial family of Western Maryland, originally from German extraction but himself American born, His birth took place at Lonaconing, Allegany County Maryland, December 27, 1869. His parents were Lawrence and Minnie (Schaidt) Rank, people of sterling personal worth, and his inheritance of heir study traits was often manifested in later life, as he forged forward in the vocation he had early chosen. After attending the public schools, Mr. Rank learned the newspaper trade, and in the course of time became the owner of the Lonaconing Review, a journal that became noted for its timely editorial work as long as he continued as it proprietor.
After Disposing of that newspaper he purchased the Cumberland Independent and soon made it a leading organ of the Republican Party in Allegany County. He was never a seeker for political honors for himself, but was a loyal and willing worker for his friends. He was a genial temperament and sociably inclined and was identified with a number of representative fraternal organizations. Included in which were the Royal Arcanum, the Heptasophs and the Eagles. Especially public spirited in everything concerning the welfare of his state and city, he lent his influence to establish substantial enterprises with this end in view. He was long identified with the Maryland State Firemen's Association, and for some time served as its secretary. Reared in the faith of the Lutheran Church he was a member of that denomination from boyhood. The arts had in him a liberal patron, and he was an accomplished musician. On June 15, 1893, Mr. Rank was married at Frostburg, Maryland, to Miss Mary Jane Dando
and they became the parents of two sons, James Lindley and Lawrence Henry.
James Lindley Rank is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, from which he took his degree of Bachelor of Arts, and he took his degree of Master of Arts from Columbia University, New York City. He enlisted in the World War in 1917, and was severely injured by a gunshot wound in the right lung during the Argonne offensive, September 27, 1918, from which he has never recovered (he lived many years after that. I remember Lindley Rank and his bicycle in the 1950's.)
Lawrence H. Rank enlisted in the World War, 1917 and received his rank of Second Lieutenant at Camp Gordon Officers' Training Camp. In June, 1922, he was graduated from the Carnegie Technical School, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and is now engaged in the practice of architecture in that city. He married Miss Emma Edwards, daughter of U.B.F. Edwards a prominent citizen of Frostburg, in June 1923, Both the young men possess exceptional ability and can number with their advantages an inheritance of talent from both parents.

"History of Allegany County" by Thomas & Williams
Mrs. Rank was born at Frostburg, Maryland, and is a member of an old and distinguished family of Allegany County. Her father, the late Judge James Dando, was exceedingly prominent in Western Maryland for many years, and a dominant citizen of Frostburg throughout his active life. After serving most usefully in civic offices at Frostburg, he was elected a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, and still later was made Judge of the Orphans' Court, and was serving on the bench at the time of his death. It was largely through Judge Dando's efforts that the State Normal School was brought to Frostburg. Judge Dando is survived by his family of eleven children, namely William whose interests were in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is now a resident of Frostburg, Owen, Elizabeth and James E. all of whom live at Frostburg, Sarah who is a newspaper woman, has been connected with the Frostburg Mining Journal for 27 years, Mary Jane who is the widow of Henry Clay Rank, resides at Frostburg, Grace who is principal of the Model School department of the State Normal School at Frostburg, Anna who was a member of the Tuberculosis Commission, New York City, was a Red Cross nurse and served sixteen months abroad with the Near East Relief Commission in 1917 and 1918 and was engaged in establishing clinics in Armenia and the Near East, is now residing in Florida, having married Mr. Hillis C. Parmalee, John T. who resides at Frostburg, Lettie who is the wife of J.F. Dillon, a business of Frostburg, and Elsie who has always resided in the old home at Frostburg, married Mr. Clifton Geis, a construction contractor and prominent citizen of Frostburg, in July, 1923.
Mrs. Mary J. Rank, like other members of father's family, had public school advantages at Frostburg, and when she had completed her courses, she turned her attention to a professional career rather than devote herself entirely to social life, for which she and her sister's had also been well prepared. For five years she was one of the teachers of the Beall High School, Frostburg, but then retired from the educational field in order to maintain a well-appointed home and look after her young sons. Following the death of her husband, Mrs. Rank returned to Frostburg and has since maintained her home there ever since. She spent four summers at John Hopkins Summer School, having re-entered the educational field, and is well known and extremely popular all over the county, as an instructor. She has been principal of the Grahamtown School, Frostburg, the Marland Avenue School of Cumberland, and for the past seven years has been principal of the Hill Street Grammer School, Frostburg. Mrs. Rank was elected the first woman president of the Allegany Teachers Association, and held that office for three years. During the World War she was chairman of the Woman's Work of Frostburg District of the American Red Cross for one year, and organized and conducted the first Junior Red Cross of the county at the Hill Street Grammer School, for the aid and relief of soldiers and sailors. Mrs. Rank also takes an active interest in the public questions of the day, in the club activities or her sex, and in social life is a factor as she is in various charities.
