The Mineralogical Record Bigraphical Archive posted the following bio online: John F. Fargo (1834-ca.1915) John Franklin Fargo was born in Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts on July 4, 1834, the son of Matilda Thompson and Franklin Fargo, a farmer. His family moved to Caneadea, Allegany County, New York before 1850. It appears that he enlisted in the Union Army (Company H, 14TH Cavalry Regiment) in Illinois in January 1863, but deserted in March of that year. In any case, by 1880 he and his family had definitely moved to Norwood Park (Chicago area), Cook County, Illinois where John was employed as a Professor of Music; he had married and had a son, Irving C. Fargo, ca. 1861, but his wife had apparently died. In 1885 he married again, to Flora Amanda Edwards in Minneapolis, but they had no children. He then moved to Los Angeles (1900 census, Monmouth Ave.; 1910 census, Benefit St.), where he listed himself as a physician. His mineral labels give the address "137 West Adams St., Los Angeles, Cal." He assembled a substantial collection of average to good mineral specimens that now comprise a significant portion of the extensive research mineral collection of the California Institute of Technology. He died between 1910 and 1920 (his widow appears on the 1920 Los Angeles census, on Monmouth Ave.). References: U.S. Federal Census 1840, 1850, 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920 ROSSMAN, G.
