Notes
a. Note:   James Cullen Ferguson Biography 1819-1898
James Cullen Ferguson Esq. was born in 1819 in the parish of Barony (Glasgow) in Lanark, Scotland. He emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to New York, USA with his mother in 1823. They arrived on the ship “Friends” on 10 May 1823. His family then settled in Sangerfield Township, Oneida County, New York where James attended school until he was ten years of age. About 1830, he moved from New York with his parents, William and Christian, brother John, and sister Elizabeth to Erie County, Pennsylvania. His family eventually settled in St. Clair Township in Columbiana County, Ohio by 1840. He moved to nearby Beaver County, Pennsylvania where James worked as a weaver in the woolen factories until the introduction of power looms. While working there as a manager, James met his future wife, Margaret Baker. In November of 1844 James and Margaret were married in the borough of Fallston in Beaver County, Pennsylvania. James and Margaret and their youngest three children lived in Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania until the Spring of 1851. Since the woolen factories no longer needed weavers, James decided to purchase land for farming in Indiana. In the Spring of 1851, James and Margaret, daughter Barbara Ann and sons William Baker and James Cullen, Junior traveled down the Ohio River to New Albany, Indiana by steamboat. Then by wagon, they moved to the small 40 acre farm that James had purchased in Greene County about one mile west of Scotland, Indiana. Two years later, James sold that farm and purchased a much larger farm two and a half miles east of Scotland on Owensburg Road where he and Margaret raised their family of ten children . James was a common farmer and worked the 160 acres of good farm land for several years. James also studied law and served the public for eighteen years, first in the capacity of road supervisor and second as Justice of the Peace and trustee for two four year terms. James was united with the Methodist Episcopal Church in Scotland, Indiana in the winter of 1875 and served the church as trustee for many years.
