Note: Charles Kenneth Monk, Sr. was born 09 Nov 1913 in Fairbanks, Sullivan County, Indiana and died 27 Jul 2011 in Commerce, Oakland County, Michigan. He was one of sixteen children born to Thomas William Monk and Mary Emmaline Chickadonz. As a child, Charles lived in Graysville, Sullivan County, Indiana and attended Graysville High School. Charles worked for Arbaces Cushman when he was about 18 years old and then as a farm laborer for Commodore "Buck" Monk.
Charles wrote a rhyme in Catherine Ferguson's autograph book on October 15, 1933:
"Do you love me or do you not? You told me once but I forgot."
After marrying Catherine Ferguson in 1935, Charles and wife, Catherine, lived northeast of Graysville. They lived in an upstairs apartment for a short time before moving to a small house near Graysville. Later they moved to the "Whitlock Farm" owned by Clarence and Grace Whitlock. This farm was located between Graysville and Fairbanks, Indiana.
In 1936 Kenneth and Catherine moved to what was known as the "Usery Addition" in Sullivan, Indiana. The house was located on the corner of East Silver Street and 50th.
Charles Jr. was born in this house in 1939.
In 1943 Charles Kenneth Monk, Sr. moved with his wife Catherine, daughter Beverly and son Charles Jr. from Sullivan County, Indiana to Pontiac, Michigan. Work was scarce in Indiana and many people migrated north to Michigan to work in the factories and auto assembly plants for better wages. Also his brothers Carl, Edward and Ernest had moved to Michigan. Carl and Edward moved to Pontiac in 1938 and Ernest to Ecorse in 1941. His father moved to Pontiac in 1942 and was working at Wilson Foundry. Thomas was able to get a job for Kenneth in the machine room at Wilson Foundry as an engine block inspector.
"Ken" worked at Wilson Foundry from 1943-1947 as an inspector but found factory work to be dirty and unrewarding. Around 1948 he took a new job working as groundskeeper at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan. He quickly moved up the ladder working in the maintenance department, as a licensed boiler operator, electrician, Power Plant Supervisor and eventually as Chief Engineer. He worked there for 30 years before retiring in 1978 at age 65.

MONK, KENNETH, SR.; of Union Lake; July 27, 2011; age 97; born November 9, 1913 in Sullivan Co. IN. Son of the late Thomas W. and Mary E. Monk; husband of Geraldine Monk; father of Beverly A. Hundley (James deceased), Charles K. Monk Jr. (Judith), Harry D. Monk (Alicia), Paul W. Monk (Diane), and Phyllis E. Collins (Larry); also survived by many grandchildren; great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; preceded in death by his grandson, Gregory Monk; brother of Frances Cooley (Marvin), Dean Monk (Jean), Maxine Page and Walter Monk; preceded in death by several brothers and sisters; also survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and close friends. Mr. Monk was a member of Hospital Engineers Association and retired from St. Joseph Mercy-Oakland Hospital. A Celebration of Kenneth's Life will be held Saturday, July 30, 2011, 1 p.m. at Donelson, Johns and Evans Funeral Home, Waterford. Rev. Delbert Covington officiating. Interment White Chapel Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Great Lakes Caring Hospice. Envelopes available at the funeral home.
