Notes
a. Note:   John Cullen Ferguson was born in Sangerfield Township, Oneida County, New York on April 2, 1826. About 1833, John moved from New York to Erie County, Pennsylvania with his parents, William and Christian, brother, James and sister, Elizabeth. Sometime before 1840, the family moved to St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1856, John moved to Scotland, Indiana with his mother and father and John lived with both of his parents until his mother died in 1862. John was a farmer. He continued to live with his father until about 1864 when he married Helen C. Dawson. Helen and her family had also lived in Columbiana County, Ohio where she was born. When they married on September 1, 1864, John and his wife Helen bought a large farm in the area of Greene County, Indiana known as Koleen originally called New Scotland.
From September 29, 1864 to June 18, 1865 John served as a Private in the 42nd Regiment, Company A of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry for the Union Army during the Civil War. He fought in Sherman's army in the famous "March to the Sea" Nov 15-Dec 15 1864, Capture of Savannah, Georgia Dec 1864 and in the Campaign of the Carolinas January-April 1865. When mustered out, John was recognized for his "Distinguished Service". John was active in politics and was one of the few Abolitionists in early times. He was a member of the Whig political party.
In 1879, John Cullen Ferguson applied to the U.S. Post Office Department for a town name and post office for the community. That same year, the community was surveyed and laid out in fifty-four lots by B.N. Griffing and published by D.J. Lake & Co. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The fifty-four lots were purchased from John Cullen Ferguson at ten dollars per lot and were from the southeastern part of his farm. John requested from the Post Office Department that the town be named Cullen or Coleen but for some reason, when the official name came back it was spelled Koleen. This was probably because the railroad officials called the area Koleen for the Kaolin clay mined in the area for making pottery.
John Cullen Ferguson was the champion clog dancer of the Koleen community and was a very jolly man. There was a sawmill with a large shed just north of the Lynch farm along the road. People met there from all over the neighborhood for a competition in clog dancing and John was always the champion. A man by the name of Taylor (one of Mary Lusetta Taylor's brothers?) from Doans was next best.
John's name is found on the List of Patrons from the 1879 Atlas of Greene County, Indiana. His occupation is listed as farmer, the post office is listed as Koleen, his nativity is listed as Oneida County, New York and the year of his arrival in Greene County is listed as 1856.
