Notes
a. Note:   William Ferguson Biography 1793-1873
William Ferguson was born March 12, 1793 in the parish of Barony, now a part of Glasgow in Lanark County, Scotland. He was christened on March 19, 1793. William was both a weaver and a farmer. William Ferguson and Christian Cullen married in the parish of Barony, Glasgow, Scotland on August 7, 1818. According to National Archives records, William emigrated from Glasgow, Scotland to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1822. According to a story (unconfirmed) told by William's son James to grandson Lewis Waggoner, William Ferguson had attended a religious meeting in Scotland which was raided and many were imprisoned. William quickly left Scotland and made his way to the United States, leaving his wife, Christan Cullen Ferguson to sell their home in Scotland and follow him later. Christian arrived in New York, with son James, on the ship "Friends" from Greenock, Scotland on May 10, 1823. Christian's arrival with son James in 1823 is documented in the book "Passenger Arrivals at the Port of New York" by Elizabeth Bentley. According to the publication "Early History of Greene County, Indiana", William and Christian were blessed with three sons and a daughter. The third son likely died in infancy in Scotland before the family emigrated to the United States. While living in his homeland of Scotland, William served in the British Army for three years under the Prince Regent (George IV) sometime after 1810. He may have served in Canada or New York during this time and become familiar with the area where they eventually settled. The 1820 Census report in fact shows a William Ferguson in Oneida County, New York prior to his emigration in 1822. William and Christian settled in Oneida County, New York in 1823. According to the 1830 U.S. Census report the family was living in Sangerfield Township, Oneida County, New York. After 1830, William and Christian and their three children moved from Oneida County, New York to Erie County, Pennsylvania. Sometime before 1840, William moved his family to St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. After 1840, William’s son James moved to nearby Beaver County, Pennsylvania. Beaver County was well known for its wool carding business and woolen factories and William and his son James were both weavers. In 1844, son James married Margaret Baker and lived in Darlington Township, Beaver County, Pennsylvania. After James' marriage, William and Christian with son John and daughter Elizabeth remained in St. Clair Township, Columbiana County, Ohio for a while. About 1845, daughter Elizabeth married William Conkle in Columbiana County, Ohio. Elizabeth and her family lived in Columbiana County until after 1870 when they moved to Sonoma, California. In 1854, William Ferguson is shown as a trustee of Wayne Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. In 1856, William and Christian and son John moved to Scotland, Indiana where son James had settled in 1851. Son John also purchased additional farm land in Greene County, Indiana in 1859 according to U.S. Land Patent records. Both William and Christian were members of the United Presbyterian Church in Scotland, Indiana. After Christian died in 1862, William continued to live with his son John in Scotland, Greene County, Indiana. After son John married and went off to war in 1864, William lived with his son James and family on their farm in Scotland, Indiana. William lived with son James and family until his death in 1873 in Scotland, Greene County, Indiana.
