Note: Arthur F. Nowell enlisted into the 31st Regiment, Georgia Infantry on November 13, 1861 in Weston, GA. Arthur was wounded several times during the Civil War. From the company muster rolls he was wounded in November 1862 and spent some time in the hospital. In December of 1862 he was wounded again at the the Battle of Fredricksburg, VA on December 13, 1862. In January 1863 he recieved treatment for his left hand at CSA General Hospital in Farmville, Virginia. Arthur F. Nowell was taken prisoner of war on May 12, 1864. Apparently during this time he must have been seriously wounded because his right arm had to be amputated. The operation on his arm took place at Stanton U.S. Army General Hospital. On May 28, 1864 Arthur died from the amputation of his right arm according to the "Record of Death and Interment." He was buried on May 29, 1864 in Arlington National Cemetery, Grave 9, Range 2, Block 1, Section A. I want to give a great deal of thanks to Lonnie Nowell for all the information on Arthur F. Nowell. Without Lonnie's tireless effort much of this information would not be available.
