Note: Mary Helen Haines research notes: In looking for the parents of Margaret McCoy and Martin Meredith: The only county where I have found both McCoys and Merediths in Virginia has been Dinwiddie Co. VA. In 1790 there is a Daniel McCoy and a David, William, and Francis Meredith in Dinwiddie. In 1800 there are still both McCoy and Merediths. In 1810 there is a Francis, Lewis, and William Meredith still present. In the 1820 census I found a Margrett McCoy in Dinwiddie County on page 394 (Image 12 of 30 online). She is a widow over 45 years of age. On the same page is a Francis Meredith, also elderly. This might provide another starting point for more research for Martin Meredith and Margaret McCoy's origins. Margaret must have been a very strong woman, keeping her family together and always raising more. In 1850 she is living with her daughter Ann, sons Elisha, John, William. Also there is George Meredith (born 1842, of uncertain parents), and Monroe Jones, daughter Matilda Jane's widow and Monroe's two children Andrew J. and James M. Jones. In 1860 Margaret is living in Dist. 12 with Ann 43, William 20, George Meredith 14, and A.J. Jones 12. In 1870, after the war, Margaret is living on a farm with son Edward and his wife Elizabeth (Ed and Betty). She is now 70 years old and living with Ann, and Andrew Jones and George Jones (born 1855). A woman, Ann Cody, age 32, also lives with them. I am not sure about George Meredith/George Jones. Is this the same person, and which is the correct birth year. Whose child is he? In the 1872 tax list, M.L. Meredith is shown paying taxes on 400 acres of land valued at $2000. J.W. Meredith is registered as paying a poll tax in this district as well, but owning no land. The last census available is in 1880 and she and Ann are still living with Ed and Betty and now son James as well on a farm next to John Crook and wife Sarah. This is in Dist. 6, which is the Old Zion Community. I believe she is buried next to her sons Ed and James W. at Old Zion. There are two unmarked spaces next to the brothers and their wives. I believe they are the places of Margaret and her daughter Ann.
