Notes
a. Note:   er brother John M. age 12-TN.
Shows up on the White county tax list for the first time in 1876 in Dist. 1, paying a poll tax, but owning no land. In 1880 he is listed again in Dist. 1 as James Hill, and also E.C. Hill and L.D. Hill are listed, all with no land.
In 1884 J.A. Hill is listed with 30 acres in Dist. 3, and four town lots. His 30 acres are next to Doyle's land. J.M. Hill is also listed in this district, without land. and Betsy Hill (Elizabeth Hill, his mother) is here with her same 106 acres that she has till her death. Dist. 3 is the Doyle area, where the original land from Thomas Hill is.
Letter from his son James Brents Hill to W.F. Hill in Brazos Texas, Jan. 26, 1912: "My father was a democrat, had a fair education, was a considerabvle trader and merchant, served in the Confederate Army, lost all he had accumulated through the War, served as Circuit Court Clerk of Van Buren County for a number of years, and died an honest, intelligent, and loving father."
Hard to know about which Confederate regiment James A. Hill served in. There is a James Hill that is W.R.'s brother and this, W.R.'s uncle. One James Hill was in Co. A of the 25th and then Co.D of the 13th. James Brents Hill believed his father was in the 35th, although that seems unlikely. The men of the 35th, Co. H, were from Sequatchie Co., and this group of Hills were related to the well-known Confederate Col. Benjamin J. Hill, who led the 35th. But, do not know for certain. The James Hill of the 35th Co. H, is in Box 231, Extraction 20, Record 3420. Need to see the record.
Note:   In 1850 appears on census in White Co., 3rd district, p. 35 married to Hulda (20, born in VA.) and living with what appears to be her brother William F.(23-VA.), and sister Evaline (16-TN.), and young
