a. Note:   Reportedly named after George Bain Mathews' friend, LaFayette Dickey (B. 1840 in MO-see index for his record).
  There was a LaFayette Dickey enumerated in the 1870 census on 6/20/1870 as living in Empire Township, Stanislaus, CA: age 30, white male, Farmer, value of real estate 4000, value of personal estate 3000, born in Missouri, US Citizen. While he is enumerated by himself and therefore apparently single and without children, there is another entry for a Dickey immediately after his: Dickey David W, age 61, white male, farmer, value of real estate/personal estate: 2400/1000, born in KY, US Citizen; Barbara, age 61, white female, housekeeper, born in TN. Empire is about 20 miles from Ripon so this is probably the person he was named for. LaFayette Dickey was also enumerated in the 1900 census in Stockton, CA, married with 6 children (see his record for more information).
  I discovered several other persons named Lafayette Dickey around this time:
 - one enumerated in the 1850 census in El Dorado County, CA, born in Ohio in 1825.
 - one enumerated in the 1880 census in Bent, CO born in Illinois in 1854.
 - one that died at the age of 6 months in Ripley, IN, in May of 1850 (1850 Mortality Index)
 - one that married Deborah P. REYNOLDS on 14 Jan 1863 in Princeton, Washington, Maine (www.familysearch.com)
  One can also find several other LaFayette Mathews on rootsweb living around this time:
 - 1842-1915, died at Richfield, Michigan
 - 21 FEB 1891 - 13 DEC 1891, born in Beaver, UT
 - 12 Feb 1897 - 9 Mar 1943 , born in Panaca, NV
 - died 12/1994 in Texas
 This suggests that Lafayette was not as rare a name as one might think, at least not during this era.
