a. Note:   Biography per Desmond Bonnington, letter to Valmae Goodwin dtd. Dec. 19, 1986:
  "Rohilla (Rolla) won a statewide contest by some business machine company (probably Underwood) to be one of a group of girls to be students at a demonstration business college for one year at the exposition. Until her marriage in 1921 she worked as a bookkeper/secretary in San Francisco. Her husband Matt (Lafayette D Mathews, Sr.) was a captain in the army during WWI and remained in the reserves until WWII when he had attained the rank of colonel. But the great depression of the 1930s caused Rolla and Matt to grow apart. They were divorced in 1943. Thereafter her occupation was that of a copyholder and proofreader at the University of California Press."
