a. Note:   NSW BDM birth reg'n shows James' surname as "Hadley", but he changed it to "Griffiths" before his marriage in 1854. James was aged only 11 months when Charles died, and wasn't yet 3 years old when his mother remarried to John Griffiths. Charles was on a trip back to England when James was born and it is therefore assumed that John Griffiths was the father.
