Note: Peter Cline is listed in a 1785 document included with a petition to Thomas Carleton, Governor of New Brunswick, for a Warrant of Survey of a grant of land to the disbanded officers and men of the Pennsylvania Loyalists. There are 48 men listed on the document (13 were absent from NB), plus a number of wives and children totalling 69. Peter Cline is listed as a private present in New Brunswick. This document can be found on the Web at http://personal.nbnet.nb.ca/halew/PA-Loyal.html -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------ From "Canadian-German Folklore: Tales of the Twenty" vol 7, 1979, p. 62 With General Brock at Queenston Heights, by Wesley Frank Nunnamaker "This true story of Peter Cline is part of the family folklore from scrapbooks and records of my father, Frank C. Nunnamaker. Peter Cline and his stepson, Abraham Wagner, were stationed at Niagara, July 11, 1812, with General Brock. They had evidently made the trip by boat, because my story says, 'they landed at Queenston Heights to fight with General Isaac Brock' About two days before the Battle of Queenston Heights, Peter Cline's wife Sarah and their young son Frederick (May 5th, 1801 - 1878) rode on horseback over an Indian trail from what is now Jordan Station to Queenston Heights, to take clean clothing and supplies, as the custom was in those days, to their loved ones. When the Mother wished to return, young Frederick was very reluctant to accompany her without his Father. As she was trying to persuade him, General Brock came by, and asked what was the trouble. Upon being told, General Brock placed his hand on the boy's head and said: "My boy, you go home with your Mother, and I will send your Father home to you in a few days. I'll not keep him here long." A couple of days after, General Brock was killed, but Frederick's Father returned home as Brock had promised. Frederick Cline married Olive Nunn, and their daughter, Elizabeth Alfreda, married John Henry Nunnamaker. They were my grandparents." -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------
