Notes
a. Note:   See Vol. 8 of the Pennsylvania-German Folklore Society of Ontario, p. 38-42 and references to the death of Elizabeth's mother (Anna Culp) in 1803.
. . . "Two months later, a funeral cortege once again moved slowly into the Moyer cemetery, bearing the body of Anna, the wife of deacon John Fretz' son Manassah.
"It will be hard for Manassah, poor man," sighed Elizabeth, breaking the silence as the Frys drove home in their wagon late that afternoon.
"Yes, but not quite as difficult as it was for Michael Rittenhouse," Jacob (Fry) replied. "At least Nas has one girl big enough to look after things."
"Yes, his Elizabeth is fourteen now, and he can likely count on her help for a while. Did you see the way she stepped up and took her father's arm after it was over? It was so touching."
"And the little ones, David and the twin girls," Jacob added. "They hung onto his hands as if they were afraid he might leave them too. It's so hard for children to understand."
