August 22, 1879 "Hickman Pioneer" included "Transfers of Real Estate," C.D. Mathis to G.W. Mathis, 73.25 acres in Eleventh District, $150. Subject farm is located at the end of John Jenkins road in Aetna, Tennessee.
1880 FEDERAL CENSUS, HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE
Page 4, Supervisor District 4, Enumeration 90 on June 4, 1880 lists all the children as shown on this family group, as well as G.W. Mathis and wife Elizabeth.
  HICKMAN COUNTY, TENNESSEE MAGISTRATE
George Mathis was a Magistrate in the 11th district of Hickman County, Tennessee for six years. He made bond on October 1, 1883. (I believe a Magistrate was an elected official, the term being six years.)
George Mathis administered the marriage rites for A.M. Flowers and Sarah Brown on February 2, 1884, with bond being made by J.M. Flowers.
  FAMILY BIBLE
In October 2003, a gentleman by the name of Lee Wayne Jones, of Bowie, Texas, sent me (JPC) an e-mail in which he indicated he was in the possession of a family Bible that recorded the names and birth dates of G.W. Mathis and his children. Mr. Jones was kind enough to send it to me and I now have it. The Bible was printed circa 1910, so I believe it to have been owned by one of the children of this union, likely Martha Anne Mathis (born 1871) or one of her children. I think this family (Martha Anne and husband Joseph A. Jones) lived in the small community of Paducah, Texas just west of Wichita Falls during the early part of the 20th century. The Bible had a list of names and dates that included the Murphy and Bailey surnames, both of which were part of the extended family.
