Notes
a. Note:   OBITUARY
Newspaper clipping in Carter's Creek, Tennessee, where Sarah lived with her daughter Sarah Jane Mathis Flanigan, stated: "Sallie Mathis, widow of G.W. Mathis, one of the most prominent citizens of Hickman County, died Wednesday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. E.R. Flanagan of Carter's Creek following a long illness. Mrs. Mathis was born and reared in Hickman County and was a member of one of the most well-to-do families in the county. She was a member of the Christian Church since girlhood and was esteemed and loved by all who knew her. For the past twelve months she had made her home with her daughter at Carter's Creek where her death was deplored by the entire community."
After her husband died, Elizabeth went to live with her children. The 1910 census shows her in the household of her son William Paul Mathis, but when she died, she was living at the time with her daughter, Sarah Jane Mathis Flanigan, in Carter's Creek, Tennessee.
Sarah is buried in the Aetna Cemetery. I have an old photograph of "Granny Mathis," taken in 1912, with her standing in front of a white picket fence. I have another photograph of two old ladies taken in front of a house and behind a picket fence. I believe one of the old ladies is Sarah Thornton Mathis, and the other one to be her sister, Mary Elizabeth, born 1845.
Note that “Sally” (or, “Salley” as her son Joseph Wiley Mathis spelled it) is a diminutive for “Sarah.” I suppose that’s where Sally Cleo Mathis (Jones), Joe’s firstborn child, got her name.
