Notes
a. Note:   Ezra Smith McMullen provided the first bit of genealogical history when he noted that our lineage was through the children of James P. Gooch and Louisa Padgett, and he listed their children as "Louis G., Elizabeth Ellen, Susan C., Ezra S. and Sam P." He then further cites the marriage of Susan C. Gooch to John McMullen, and lists their children as "Louisa Jane, Ezra S., Ira G., Dean M., and Eva Ellen."
The obvious conflict here is that he shows our direct descent to be from both James P. Gooch and his sister, Elizabeth Jane Gooch.
In August 1999, I received information on the above that substantiates Ezra's material. In fact, John Liner McMullen (b. 1847) did marry his first cousin, Susan Craig Gooch (b. 1846). The family tree information reflects that rather dubious distinction.
On a birthday postcard dated February 13, 1914, postmarked Kempner, Texas, Susan Craig McMullen writes her daughter, Eva Mathis (who by this time had been married about four years, with a two year old child, Sally Cleo Mathis):
"Dear Eva, I rec'd your card and will now send you one. Was good to hear you was getting along alright. We are all well. But it's sure cold this morning. I will write you a letter next week. As ever your mother, S.C. McMullen."
Kempner, Texas is a small town north of Austin, Texas and about 25 miles from Bertram, where Eva Ellen Mathis was living at the time.
