Note: Judge Nicholas DE LA VERGNE [Parents] was born 1 in 1697 in France. He died 2 in Apr 1792 and was buried in Washington Hollow Cemetery, Dutchess Cnty., NY. Judge Nicholas DE LA VERGNE married 3 Mary HUSTED in 1750/1751. Other marriages: WEAVER, Frances Warner "Clearly the name De La Vergne is French and there is little doubt that France was the native land of Nicolas, the immigrant ancestor. The name spelled with "De" as a separate word indicates a noble birth and, as research began, two accounts of the family origins indicated this. Since both accounts were of recent origin and were not accompanied by documentary proof, good genealogical practice required substantiating evidence. Further research, however, produced no results and the legend of noble extraction became increasingly uncertain. Instead historical facts tend to make alternate theories equally plausible. Additiona research is needed and the foolowing discussion is offered to serve as a basis. The reader is free to draw his own conclusions but should be aware that much is highly speculative. The legend given to us is as follows: The De La Vergne family originally came from France where the family records go back prior to the year 1200. They are allied in marriage to the noblest houses of France, among them being those of the Clermont, de la Fayette and D'Aubusson. They are related to General Lafayette: the older members of the family always spole of him as "cousin" and at a public reception given him in Poughkeepsie, when he visited the country in 1824, special seats were provided for them up on the platform. Records and traditions show that members of this family were crusaders, that during many centuries they were a race of brave and loyal knights, and that among them were men who bore the title of marquis, count, baron and chevalier. It is clearly shown that they have always been intensely patriotic, gallant soldiers, and a number of ministers of the church are also foind in the family. Nicolas De La Vergne, M.D., son of Marquis Rene Edmond de la Vergne was born in France in 1697 in 900 year old chateau located at Saint Priest-Ligoure in the province of Auvergne. While a medical student he engaged in a duel and killed a figure high in political circles. He was spirited aboard a French man-o-war and he arrived in this country in 1720. First in Westchester then in 1720 in Washington, Dutchess Cnty 1749 bought property in Poughkeepsie from Johua Hunt. That is the legend." Note that theremay be materials to confirm this in the Newberry Library In Chicago, Ill. DOM Undoccumented source he arrived in NYC, then New Rochewlle in Westchester, was a merchant as early as 1748, until 1742 in Dutchess, her was sueing people for not payment of debts and documents exixted to verify this.
