Note: Joan R. Thielen of Warminster died peacefully Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, at Arden Courts. She was 80.
Joan was born in Passaic, N.J., to the late Joseph and Sophie Gall. She was married for 46 years to the late Albert F. Thielen Jr.
Joan enrolled at Fairleigh Dickinson College and represented the school in the New York City shorthand contests, taking the certificate for the 120 word per minute pace. Unfortunately, she was not able to continue after her father died during her freshman year so she returned home to assist around the house until later taking a job at Philco Corporation in Philadelphia, where she met her husband.
She volunteered her time during her younger years at the YMCA, and at St.
John's Lutheran Church, where she was a member and a past Sunday school teacher.
She retired in 1994 from General Instrument Corporation (now Comcast), where she worked as an administrative assistant.
She enjoyed her retirement, being around the house with her family in the backyard pool; trying out complicated recipes, gardening, sewing and watching her grandchildren.
Joan is survived by her daughters, Melissa Ellis and her husband, Robert, of Port Jervis, N.Y., and Christine and David Nonnenman of Warrington; granddaughters, Amanda and Brittany Ellis, Jessica Nonnenman, and grandson, Devin Nonnenman; a sister, Dorothy Oliemuller of Florida; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Joan was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Hempel of Florida.
Relatives and friends will be received by her family from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday, in Schneider Funeral Home, 431 N. York Road, Hatboro, and are invited to attend her memorial service at 4 p.m. Her interment will be held privately.
Memorials may be made to the Joan R. Thielen Fund, 732 W. Street Road, Warminster, PA 18974, or at any local Wells Fargo Branch.
