Notes
a. Note:   N212 First husband Emmett McGettigan
1944 May 12 - New Bedford, Mass. Promised to Keep Calm Sailor Husband Missing
Special to Star. My husband loved the sea which he has sailed since he was a boy, Mrs Dermot T English, slowly spoke these words she glanced from time to time at a letter she had just received from Canadian naval headquarters, in forming her hand a Lieut command in RCNR, was missing at sea. She had not heart from her husband for sometime.
Don't Worry, Mom, I can take care of myself - this is exciting & I like it. Harry E R Burns 22, dietitian & cook in RCN wrote home recently. He is reported missing at sea, bringing to 10 the number of Toronto navy men whole next of kin have been advised are missing. s.p Mr Mrs Fred Burns, Doverncour Ed. He was one of the original crew of his shop for which he volunteered after. He trained at York & Halifax.

. 1944 May 15 - 121 Missing as Frigate Sunk - 5 dead, 38 Rescued as Valleyfield Lost, The Canadian frigate Valleyfield has been torpedoes & sun in the North Atlantic with 5 dead & 121 missing. Hon. Angus Macdonald, minister of naval services announced today. There were 38 survivors.
Mr. Macdonald said the warship was torpedoed while on escort duty & sank almost immediately after being hit. He did not indicate how the survivors were were rescued, time or the location. Premier Mackenzie king, attending the prime ministers' conference inLondon, has cabled message of sympathy to relatives.
The Valleyfield, built at Quebec, was commissioned last December. She was the first Canadian frigate to be sunk & the first Cdn ship to be lost on escort duty since the destroyer St Croix was torpedoed last Sept. The torpedoing of the Valleyfield gave emphasis to recent warnings that renewed German Uboat warfare might break out again at any time. The announcement followed close on the heels of a statement by Mr Mcdonald which he urged residents in the lower St Lawrence area stringently to observe dismount regulations during the summer shipping seasons which has just started. Naval circles here saw distinct indication at the the navy was preparing for the German underseas fleet to make a final desperate attack onCdn. shipping lanes. The Valleyfield was the 16th vessel lost by Canada since the war started.
 - Two saved off Valleyfield had been in sinking before: Sgm. Terrence Peter O'Connor, High Park Ave., LStkr John Murray Willard 9th St. New Toronto, a surveyor of the Valleyfield, only las February was n a ship which was torpedoed & lost everything he had with him.
 - 38 of Valleyfield Crew are listed as survivors:

 * Missing: McGettigan, Emmett Patrick, Ldg. Cook Sr. Mrs Iris McGettigan wife, 126 Oak St., Toronto.
. 1947 Oct 20. To Editor of the Star: Palestine Partition: Sir it is very doubtful that the partition of Palestine, if enforced, will be successful. This solution in the case of Ireland, at any rate, proved of little good, since it has practically ruined that country economically. We can only look to example & experience for advice & when we do we can almost inevitably see that the partitions disastrous.
Look at India. Her troubles had just begun with partition The economic unity & stability of the nation have been wrecked by this division. Take our own Canada here. The French & English factions have been traditionally opposed, but as years go by have to live harmoniously united together. Suppose someone suggested that the French & English ares of Canada be separated! Think of the resultant chaos. Our country would be completely disrupted. There is just as little sense in partitioning Ireland, India or Palestine.Such procedure will bring long with economic disaster further antipathy & friction. It is frightfully foolish to say that the opposing parties cannot be reconciled, as history has proved otherwise.
