Note: Apr. 27, 1927-Dec. 25, 2015 Dorothy Windle Smith Obituary April 27th, 1927 December 25th, 2015, Dorothy "Dot" Evelyn Windle Smith, age 88, of Birmingham, AL passed away peacefully on Christmas morning at St. Vincent's Hospital, Birmingham, AL. She lived a full and beautiful life of service to The Lord and her family. Born and raised in Reform, AL, she was the daughter of the late William Burtus and Julia Anna Jane Fulgham Windle. She attended Pickens County High School and upon graduation moved to Tuscaloosa where she worked as the secretary to the Director of Nursing at Druid City Hospital. During this time, she met and married her husband of 59 years, Amos L. Smith, Sr. She was a long time member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church while residing in the Bagley Community. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, volunteering with the St. Vincent's Hospital Women's Auxiliary, RV traveling across the country with her husband Amos and was an avid gardener. She lived the latter years of her life at Brookdale Place Independent Living where she enjoyed spending time with her many friends playing cards and bingo. She was preceded in death by her husband Amos L. Smith, Sr., her daughter Leslie Smith Glover, her sister Mabel Burkhalter and her brothers Huffman and Boyd Windle. She is survived by her son A. Lamar Smith, Jr. (Dianne), and daughters Belinda Smith Thomas (David) and Karen Smith Phillips (Ted). She is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Traci Glover Lockett (Peyton); Brian (Skyler), Daniel and Katherine Thomas; Amos and Georgia Smith; Daniel (Tori), Joshua (Gabi), Joseph, Benjamin, Zachary, Joy, Caleb, David, Grace and Amy Phillips, and 2 great-grandchildren: Gia Evangeline Phillips and Smith Brooks Lockett. Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 29th from 12:30pm to 2:00pm at New Horizon Memorial Funeral Home in Dora, AL. A celebration of her life will follow at 2:00pm in the chapel, with a graveside service afterwards at the adjoining McCormack Cemetery. We will always remember her precious spirit, her kindness and her self-sacrifice to others. Since she sweetly exemplified a servant's heart and valued the nursing profession, the family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Vincent's Foundation, One Medical Park East Drive, Birmingham, AL 35235.
