Note: Nancy Ann Luttrell was the daughter of William Melton Littrell and Mary K. Floyd. The name Littrell seems to change back and forth between Littrell and Luttrell. Mary K. Floyd was William's second wife and she had two sisters who also married Luttrell's - Caroline Nancy Floyd and Elizabeth Elender Floyd. William Melton Littrell and Mary K. Floyd were married on September 10, 1867 in Hickory County, Missouri. Now to Nancy and Millard Butler: I have Millard F. Butler born circa 1855-1856 in Illinois according to the 1870 and 1880 Hickory County, Missouri Census. Millard is a School Teacher. 1870 Tyler, Hickory County, Missouri Census; Roll: M593_779; Page: 69; Image: 139. Post Office: Elkton, Missouri. John A. Butler, age 44 (born circa 1826), male, white, farmer, born Tennessee. Mary Butler, age 43 (born circa 1827), female, white, keeping house, born Illinois. William H. Butler, age 18 (born circa 1852), male, white, farm laborer, born Illinois. Peter D. Butler, age 16 (born circa 1854), male, white, farm laborer, born Illinois. Millard F. Butler, age 14 (born circa 1856), male, white, farm laborer, born Illinois. George W. Butler, age 9 (born circa 1861), male, white, farm laborer, born Illinois. Sarah A. Butler, age 8 (born circa 1862), female, white, born Illinois. Edwin S. Butler, age 6 (born circa 1864), male, white, born Illinois. Listed next to Samuel Butler and Thomas Butler. 1880 Wheatland, Hickory County, Missouri Census; Roll: T9_690; Family History Film: 1254690; Page: 529.3000; Enumeration District: 239; Image: 0140. Henry Mc Claslin, age 60 (born circa 1820), farmer, born North Carolina, parents born North Carolina. Rachel Mc Claslin, age 58 (born circa 1822), wife, born Tennessee, father born TN, mother born PA John Mc Claslin, age 21 (born circa 1859), son, clerk in store, born Missouri. Jimmie Ervin, age 16 (born circa 1864), servant, housekeeper, born Illinois, father born Ohio, mother born Iowa. F. M. Butler, age 25 (born circa 1855), boarder, School Teacher, born Illinois. I have Nancy as born circa 1866 according to the 1870 census records where she is listed as 4 years of age. Because her mother didn't marry until 1867, Nancy ws most likely born out of wedlock. Something not uncommon in that area. 1870 Waynesville, Tavern Township, Pulaski County, Missouri Census; Roll: M593_801; Page: 211; Image: 101. Littrell, Melton, age 45 (born circa 1825), male, white, Farmer, born Illinois. Littrell, Mary, age 26 (born circa 1844), female, white, keeping house, born Illinois. Littrell, Elizabeth, age 21 (born circa 1849), female, house keeper, born Illinois. Littrell, Susan, age 19 (born circa 1851), female, white, at home, born Illinois. Littrell, John, age 17 (born circa 1853), male, white, farm laborer, born Texas. Littrell, Ellen, age 15 (born circa 1855), female, white, born Texas. Littrell, William, age 5 (born circa 1865), male, white, born Missouri. Littrell, Nancy, age 4 (born circa 1866), female, white, born Missouri. Littrell, Melton, age 2 (born circa 1868), male, white, born Missouri. The 1900 census, however, indicates that William Littrell was born Sept. 1867 and that Nancy Ann Littrell was born Aug 1874 but with a age of 36, they must have meant 1864. I have serious doubts that these years are correct. Surely Mary Floyd would know if William was 3 years old or 5 years old in 1870 when it is closer to the child's birth. 1880 Green, Hickory County, Missouri Census; Roll: T9_690; Family History Film: 1254690; Page: 513.1000; Enumeration District: 238; Image: 0108. William Luttrell, age 60 (born circa 1820), white, male, farmer, born Illinois, parents born Kentucky. Mary Luttrell, age 30 (born circa 1850), white, female, wife, keeping house, born Tennessee, father born Kentucky, mother born Tennessee. John H. Luttrell, age 26 (born circa 1854), white, male, son, at home, born Texas, father born Illinois. Nancy A. Luttrell, age 15 (born circa 1865), white, female, daughter, at home, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. William T. Luttrell, age 12 (born circa 1868), white, male, son, at home, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. James S. Luttrell, age 10 (born circa 1870), white, male, son, at home, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. Mary M. Luttrell, age 8 (born circa 1872), white, female, daughter, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. Sarah M. Luttrell, age 6 (born circa 1874), white, female, daughter, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. Benjamin H. Luttrell, age 4 (born circa 1876), white, male, son, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. Christena Luttrell, age 1 (born circa 1879), white, female, daughter, born Arkansas, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. In April 21, 1881 Nancy Ann Floyd and F. M. Butler were married in Hickory County, Missouri. I find it strange that she is listed as a Floyd and not a Littrell. I figure that Nancy was about 15 years old when she married. (My aunt was 14 when she married so this is not unusual). My grandmother, Stella Thornton, who was raised in neighboring Miller County, MO, was also born out of wedlock and she always used her mother's maiden name of Thornton. Her mother had married an Ash when Stella was 2 years old and she repeatedly tried to get Stella to use Ash as her last name indicating that Ash was her father but she refused because she didn't like Green Ash. It wasn't until years later on her mother's death bed that it was learned that Stella was fathered by Andrew Irwin. I have to wonder if this could also be the case here. So was Nancy the child of William Melton Littrell or was she born to a different man and prodded to use Littrell in an effort to ligitimize her birth? It is mentioned that Nancy was half Cherokee and half Acadian French (Cajun). The Floyds came from South Carolina where Mary's father (Thomas C. Floyd) was born in 1823 in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Nancy S. Reynolds was Mary Floyd's mother and she was from Alabama. The Luttrell's were from Virginia and were originally Irish. The only way Nancy could have some Indian in her is if William Melton Littrell wasn't her biological father which by the census could be quite likely. On the Ash side, Green Ash had a brother who was also part Indian (per family stories). So it is not unlikely. It seems that the 1900 census for Nancy Littrell Butler was quite confusing - none of the birthdates given add up to their respective ages. Nancy is listed as living with her mother who is widowed. Nancy was formerly written with a last name of Butler but it was erased and Littrell written instead. Nancy is also listed as widowed however her husband, Millard F. (Filmore?) Butler, is found living in St. Clair County, Missouri with a new family. His oldest son being born Nov 1890. 1900 Green, Hickory County, Missouri Census; Roll: T623 858; Page: 7A; Enumeration District: 96. Mary K. Littrell, head, age 48 (born May 1852), widowed, had 8 children with 6 surviving, born Tennessee, father born Virginia, mother born Tennessee. Nancy A. (Butler erased) Littrell, daughter, age 36 (born Aug 1874 - did they mean 1864?), widowed, had 2 children with 2 surviving, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Tennessee. Henry Butler, age 14 (born Aug 1885), grandson, single, born Missouri, father born Missouri, mother born Tennessee. Harvey Butler, age 9 (born April 1891), grandson, single, born Missouri, father born Missouri, mother born Tennessee. 1900 Osceola, St Clair County, Missouri Census; Roll: T623 886; Page: 8A; Enumeration District: 150. Millard F. Bulter, age 44, born Apr 1855, married for 12 years, born Illinois, father born Tennessee, mother born Illinois, Teacher. Jeline Bulter, age 31, born Mar 1859, married for 12 years, had 2 children with 2 surviving, born Missouri, parents born Illnois, Milliner. Bernn G. Bulter, age 9, born Nov 1890, son, single, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Missouri. Virdie Bulter, age 5, born Jun 1894, daughter, single, born Missouri, father born Illinois, mother born Missouri. Barry (Mary?) J. Browning, age 58 born Nov 1844, mother-in-law, female?, widowed, had 1 child with 1 surviving, born Illinois, parents born Tennessee. 1920 Sedgwick, Sedgwick County, Colorado; Roll: T625_171; Page: 5B; Enumeration District: 215; Image: 893. Henry Butler, age 38 (born circa 1882), head, married, born Missouri, father born USA, mother born Missouri, Farmer. Etta Butler, age 32 (born circa 1888), wife, born Wisconsin, father born Norway, mother born Wisconsin, Public School Teacher. Ferroll W Butler, age 9 (born circa 1911), son, single, born Colorado, father born Missouri, mother born Wisconsin. Hazel Butler, age 6 (born circa 1914), daughter, single, born Colorado, father born Missouri, mother born Wisconsin. Donald H Butler, age 1 4/12 (born circa 1918), son, single, born Colorado, father born Missouri, mother born Wisconsin. Mary Lampe, age 67 (born circa 1853), mother-in-law, divorced, born Wisconsin, parents born New York. Another thing I find strange is that if Harvey was 9 in 1900 and born in 1891, then how did Millard F. Butler and Jeline Minnie Browning have Bernus Butler on November 06, 1890. The dates overlap. Both Millard Butlers are teachers and have the same birth year and place so I'm sure they are the same person. Was Millard seeing both women? He indicates that he was married to Jeline Browning for 12 years in 1900 (circa 1888) which is shortly after Henry is born. I also find it strange that on the 1900 census, Harvey is listed as unable to read or write yet his father is a teacher. Was Harvey even fathered by Millard F. Butler? All I know is that I have a definate date of marriage for Nancy A. Floyd and F. M. Butler of 1881 and then find that by 1888 he has left her and married another woman and started a new family. 1910 Center, Hickory County, Missouri Census; Roll: T624_779; Page: 12B; Enumeration District: 65; Image: 440.
