Notes
a. Note:   Thomas C. Floyd was born around 1823 according to census and pension records. Going on the assumption that he was born in 1823 as is listed in his Civil War Pension papers, and that he was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, a check of the 1830 Spartanburg District census shows the only Floyd with a son in the age 7 slot (age of Thomas C. Floyd) is George Floyd, Sr. although it has been rumored that Thomas' father was also named Thomas.
My first solid lead of Thomas Floyd is in Hardeman County, Tennessee when he married Nancy S. Reynolds on 29 Feb 1840. Using the 1823 birthdate, Thomas would have been 17 with Nancy being 15 years of age. A search of the 1840 Hardeman County, Tennessee census records shows two different Thomas Floyd's living there but only one has a male and female falling in the 15-20 age range (Census Page 297) which match Thomas and Nancy. This family also has an older female in the 40-50 age range which is most likely the mother of one of them and which may account for the other children listed. Since Thomas and Nancy's first child, Elizabeth, was born in 1841, they would not have any children of their own in 1840.
The 1850 Marion County, Illinois Census (Page 71) shows Thomas living close to Nathaniel Luttrell but his age has jumped an extra 10 years making him now 11 years older than his wife Nancy rather than the two years previously believed. This, however, is corrected on the 1860 Miller County, Missouri census when the extra 10 years disappears again thus confirming his date of birth to be circa 1823-1824. No wife is shown on the 1860 census and with a child age 2, it can be determined that his wife, Nancy, died roughly between 1858 and 1860. I have wondered if she could have died from complications of childbirth.
After serving in the Civil War, where Thomas apparently suffered several medical problems, he then on 13 Sep 1866 married his second wife, Elender Renney. They lived in Pulaski County, Missouri according to the 1870 census but have moved to Washington County, Arkansas by 1880 and by 1900 Thomas was living with his daughter, Caroline Luttrell. He indicates his date of birth as Jan 1831 on the 1900 census records which cannot be correct as I'm sure he didn't marry his first wife, Nancy, at the age of 9. Family stories tell that Thomas married Elender Renney only to take care of his children which she resented. Supposedly she was very mean to her step-children.
Thomas Floyd died in the home of his grandson, Bluford Luttrell, in Brumley, Missouri on 14 Mar 1916. His death certificate offers no date of birth nor any parents names.
