a. Note:   William Shelton Thornton was born 27 Jan 1851 to Milton Owen Thornton and Judith Ann Luttrell. It is said that Milton knew Judith was pregnant when they married on 6 Jun 1850 in Schuyler County, Illinois. Some stories say Milton was the father while others do not. When Judith died in 1858 in Camden, Pulaski County, Missouri, he took the 7 year old William back to Schuyler County, Illinois and left him with Judith's parents (Shelton Luttrell and Sarah Ann Bryant) but never returned for him.
  Later, when Milton Owen Thornton married Elizabeth Elender Floyd (on 8 Jan 1860), they also had a son named William Shelton Thornton, born 19 Jun 1865 in Pulaski County, Missouri.
  William Shelton Thornton married (1) Deliah J. Thornton and (2) Martha Ellen Thornton, both daughters of Felix Hill Thornton and Olive "Olley" Luttrell (daughter of Shelton Luttrell and Sarah Ann Bryant). William S., Deliah, and Martha were first cousins.
  William Shelton Thornton born 27 Jan 1851 had no children by Deliah Thornton however one researcher has a letter indicating half children which would indicate that there were children by both wives. Both wives were sisters - Deliah and Martha. "...I notice that William Thornton and Martha were married in 1879, but Chester Roy Thornton is listed as born in 1875. I suspect that Chester was the son of William's first marriage to Delilah Thornton. I have received a copy of a letter from Lee Winston, a grandson of Cora Bell Thornton, that mentions a half-brother, John C. Thornton, born 8 May 1872, died 18 Mar 1881..."   I have found the bible record which was in the possession of William's half-sister, Martha Ann (Thornton) Luttrell. What I find strange is that only the William Shelton Thornton born in 1851 is listed. He was the son that was taken back to Illinois to be raised by Julia's parents. Census records show a second William Shelton Thornton born 19 Jun 1865 - so why isn't he listed?
  William Shelton Thornton, son of M.O and J.A. Thornton was born January 27 AD 1851.
 Martha Ann Thornton, William's Wife, was born August the 29 AD 1859.
