Died August 5, 1973 (Sunday Morning) at Veterans Hospital, Jefferson Barracks, Mo., of Cancer. 62 years old. Carol Schroer told me a humerous story about Herman and his brothers. Since the Battle of Pilot Knob (Civil War) was fought in their home town, they came across a mold used to make lead balls (bullets) like those used during the Civil War. Using all the lead they could find, they made up a bunch of these balls and sold them to passing tourists as souvenirs of the Civil War.
During World War II, Herman served in the infantry. There was one time in which he had a close call on his life. While walking down a road, a sniper shot someone on each side of Herman. Luckily they got the sniper before he could make his third shot. Herman also had two brothers who served in World War II - Henry and Babe. Henry drove an ambulance and Babe was in the Army Corps of Engineers building landing strips.
