Notes
a. Note:   Milton Owen Thornton
 By Marcine E. Lohman
 (marcinelohman@comcast.net)
Milton Owen Thornton was born 16 Sep 1829 in Smith County, Tennessee or Schuyler County, Illinois. (His father is listed in the 1820 Smith County, Tennessee and 1830 Schuyler County, Illinois census). His parents, Felix Thornton and Mary Celetha Holly moved westward from Sampson County, North Carolina settling for a short while in Smith County, Tennessee before continuing to Schuyler County, Illinois near the town of Browning where they died.
Milton married (1) Judith Ann Luttrell, the daughter of Shelton Luttrell and Sarah Ann Bryant, on 6 Jun 1850 in Schuyler County, Illinois but they must have moved quickly to Missouri where their son was born.
  1. William Shelton Thornton, b. 27 Jan 1851 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri
Judith died around 1858 in Pulaski County, Missouri whereupon Milton immediately took their son William Shelton Thornton back to Illinois and left him with Judith's parents. A descendant of Sarah Jane Thornton indicated that Milton knew that Judith was pregnant when he married her and he knew that the child was his. It may be that he didn't feel he could raise a young boy of 7 alone.
Milton married (2) Elizabeth Elender Floyd, the daughter of Thomas C. Floyd and Nancy S. Reynolds, on 08 Jan 1860 in Camden County, Missouri (they were married by John Shelton). Together they had four children:
  1. Steven A. Douglas Thornton, b. 20 Dec 1860
 2. Martha Ann Thornton, b. 30 May 1863
 3. William Shelton Thornton, b. 19 Jun 1865
 4. Nancy Mariah Thornton, b. 4 Oct 1866 (after her father's death)
Elizabeth Elender Floyd had an illigitimate daughter before she married Milton. Her daughter, Martha Ann Thornton, had a bible record of her father's which listed all his children and his two wives dates of birth. He also listed Sarah Jane as a daughter of Elizabeth while all the other children were listed as the son/daughter of himself and which-ever wife. Since Sarah is born before Judith has even passed away, this makes sense. On the 1860 census, Sarah Jane is listed as a Thornton.
  1. Sarah Jane (later named Thornton), b. 22 Jul 1857
Milton Thornton was a Union Veteran of the Civil War, in the Missouri Militia Home Guard, Osage County, 8th Regiment, Captain Charles D. Martin Commander. Milton enlisted on June 22, 1861, was mustered out December 20, 1861, enlisted again at Lebanon, Missouri October 26, 1863 in M.S.M. Calvery 8th Regiment, Captain Jacob Casseints commanding. (Consolidated with county Militia.) He was honorably discharged July 17, 1865 and his military records indicated he was a musician. We know he owned a fiddle which was handed down through the family in Illinois. An old newspaper article indicated he was the owner of the fiddle and that he was a member of the Jesse James Gang which I seriously doubt since Jesse James was a Confederate and Milton a Union soldier.
"The violin originally belonged to Milton Thornton, a member of the Jesse James gang, which terrorized the middle west. It came into the hands of a man named Spillers who lived in the vicinity of Beardstown. James Teel, now deceased, secured it from him, and Mrs. James Teel gave it to her daughter's husband, the present owner, recently. He is repairing it and in due season the mellow tones of this old violin will recall the memories of long ago."
Almost a year after his discharge, on 04 May 1866 Milton was bushwacked and hung by ex-Confederates. This was a common thing happening at the time in the area and several ex-Union soldiers were found hung throughout the neighboring counties.
The family stories carried down by word of mouth indicate that his son was with him, which would have to be the five year old Steven A. Douglas Thornton. He convinced them to let his son go home so he wouldn't have to watch his father die. My aunt always told me that Milton was buried on the old McNab Farm in a field near Hawkeye, Missouri. I have since learned that he is buried in the Mitschele Farm Cemetery which is up by the Miller County border and closer to where he lived and died. Five months after his death, Elizabeth would give birth to their last child, Nancy Mariah Thornton.
Milton's widow, Elizabeth Elender (Floyd) Thornton, then married Hamen C. Ellan Littrell on 05 Jan 1870 and had an additional four children by him.
I am also quite puzzled by the two sons named William Shelton Thornton that Milton has by his first and second wives. I discussed this at length with Delta Vines, Email: delta_vines@sbcglobal.net who descends from Sarah Jane Thornton. I have since found out more. William Shelton Thornton was the only child of Milton and Judith Thornton. I suspect he didn't want to take care of a child alone so he took the boy to his in-laws to raise. It could be that once the boy got there, he decided to stay with his grandparents in Illinois rather than return to Missouri. Milton later married Elizabeth Elender Floyd who had an illigitimate daughter, Sarah Jane, and this is recorded in a bible record that she is the daughter of Elizabeth (but not Milton). He then named another son by Elizabeth the same name as his son by Judith.
Milton and Judith (Luttrell) Thornton show up on the 1850 Schuyler County Census records living next to the Thornton's and Luttrells as you can see below. Felix Thornton, in house no. 118, is Milton's brother and Shelton Luttrell, in house no. 117, is Judith's father.
