Note: Henry was born on February 21, 1861 to Christian Amelung and Johanna Bodenstein. This is about the time that the Civil War would be starting. The Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob has no baptism records on him so I have very little information from the church. Henry was confirmed into the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on March 21, 1875. Henry Amelung and Helena (Lena) Gockel were united in marriage on September 3, 1882 by Mr. H. Bremer, the Evangelist Lutheran Pastor. I have received some important dates and information from his grandson, Walter Amelung which is very helpful. A newspaper article, that I received from Edith Amelung of Festus, MO, indicates that he died three months short of his 100th birthday on November 15, 1960. Henry was buried in the St. John Cemetery in Granite City, Illinois on November 18, 1860. 1900 St Louis Ward 1, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri Census; Roll: T623 889; Page: 9A; Enumeration District: 1, dated June 9, 1900. Amelung Obituary, received from Edith Amelung listed below. NEAR CENTENARIAN, HENRY J. AMELUNG, 99 DIES TUESDAY Three months short of reaching the century mark, Henry J. Amelung, one of the Quad-Cities oldest residents, died Tuesday at the Memorial Hospital at Belleville. He was 99 and would have become a centenarian next Feb. 21. Mr. Amelung lived at 2232 Washington Avenue, and had been hospitalized six days. His recipe for longevity was hard work. On his 96th birthday on Feb. 21, 1957, he hauled six tons of coal into the basement of his home. On that anniversary date, too, he received the congratulations of President Eisenhower. On the card engraved with the presidential coat-of-arms, Mr. Eisenhower wrote: "Please accept my sincere congratulations upon your birthday. May good health be yours throughout many more happy years." A Democrat, Mr. Amelung was much pleased and very grateful for the White House message. A native of Pilot Knob, Mo, the near-centenarian came to Granite City in 1899, working as a stationary engineer at the Granite City Steel Co., until he retired in 1945. A ardent baseball and boxing fan, Mr. Amelung took a keen interest in community and national events, and kept abreast of current affairs. He was an active communicant of Concordia Lutheran Church. Mr. Amelung is survived by his widow, Dixie; two sons, Walter of Granite City and Albert of Oklahoma City, Okla; a daughter, Mrs. Lydia Ranft, St. Louis; a brother, John Amelung, St. Louis, along with 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
