Roy Amelung was born to John Louis Carl Amelung and Lillie C. Mitchell on September 21, 1902. Roy was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on November 16, 1902 with J. H. Fritz performing the Ceremony. His baptism sponsors were his uncle, Hermann Amelung, Frau Neusite, and Frau Gassmaine. He worked at the Red Goose Factory in Crystal City, Missouri.
His marriage to his first wife, Violet, ended in divorce with no children. When Roy came home from work, all of his clothes were piled up in the floor and everything else was gone, including a set of china borrowed from Roy's mother. Some speculated that she would have taken the car too except that he drove it to work. Violet died in the Baptist Nursing Home in Ironton, Missouri. In 1931 they lived in St. Louis as Hattie mentioned in a letter to her father that "Roy and Violet moved downstairs from us last Monday."
His second marriage was much more successful resulting in three children by Jennie Johnson.
