Notes
a. Note:   Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, March 25, 1869, Page 3 Sad Accident.--On last Friday, about 10 o'clock A.M., Mr. JACOB MICHEL was crushed to death while mining on the top of Pilot Knob, by the falling of an enormous rock from an overhanging bank. He had both legs taken off and his head crushed, causing instant death. A few days before the accident, the whole force of workmen had tried to remove the rock from its dangerous position, but it appeared solid and firm. The working of the elements -- thaw and rain--however, caused it to fall from its position, which resulted in this terrible accident. Mr. Michel was a native of Germany, about 38 years of age, and leaves a family to mourn his untimely end. He was a resident of our Valley a number of years. Southeast Missouri Enterprise Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, March 25, 1869, Page 3. A sad and fatal accident happened on last Friday to a miner engaged in blasting iron ore on Pilot Knob. Mr. Jacob MICHEL, aged about thirty-six, a brother-in-law to Judge Dinger, of this place, was the unfortunate victim. He was engaged in drilling a hole preparatory for a blast, at the foot of a precipice caused by an excavation in the mountain, at the time of the disaster. He was stooping to clean out the hole when a large rock broke loose from the top of the pricipice about twenty-five feet distance, and came rushing down, striking once upon a kind of projection, from thence bounding upon its victim, crushing him to death instantly. It completely severed one leg from the body and crushed the other foot to atoms, the back of the head was crushed in and the brain issued there from while the forehead was badly injured and his whole body was badly bruised. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn his untimely death. Mr. M. was a good citizen, a dutiful husband, and leaves many friends in the valley to sympathize with his bereaved family. 1860 St Louis Ward 1, St Louis (Independent City), Missouri; Roll: M653_647; Page: 0; Image: 111.
