Notes
a. Note:   Iron County Register Newspaper, Thursday, April 15, 1880, Volume XIII, No. 39, Page 5, 1st Column, "Local," Lutheran Church Confirmations. At the Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on Sunday, April 4th, 1880, the following young persons received confirmation:
 John Amelung
 Elizabeth Seiler
 Henry Zink
 Magdeline Weiss
 Christine Grandhomme
 Emma Kessler
 Adeline Wolf
 Emilie Gerstemeier
 Marie Weber
 Rosetta Deufel
 Adelleid Grandhomme
The examination previous to the confirmation was very exhaustive and occupied some three hours. The ceremonies were witnessed by a very large number of people.
Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, MO, June 5, 1884 The blacksmith-shop is a very shabby looking affair. However, there is some as fine work turned out of it as is done in any shop in the state, Mr. Scott Bateman is the boss pusher of this establishment. It is nothing to see Scott throw his linen, roll back his shirt-collar and do the fine and difficult pieces of work which the balance can't cut. Joe Bushard does all the hore-shoeing, and there is considerable of it done at this shop. Mr. Louis Gantzschier, a young man of promising ability, is Mr. Busard's helper. Mr. Frank McFarland runs the first fire, and is, as near as I can see, second boss. Johnny Amelung pulls the pole for Frank. I can't say exactly, but I think Frank has worked in Pilot Knob for some five years in the company's shop. He is a sober, steady, industrious young man, and will undoubtedly make his mark as a first-class blacksmith in a short time, under the instruction of Scott. Dan Price runs the third fire in this shop. His helper Mr. Albert Gogel, who wields a ponderous sledge, and would make bigger and stouter men ashamed of themselves. Dan, under the close observance of Scott, is going to make a first-class workman. His is also strictly temperate and always at his post.
Iron County Register Newspaper, March 26, 1885, Vol. XVIII, No. 37 "Tunnel Driftings" Johnny Amelung, better known among the boys as John H. Sullivan, started to take the accomodations the other morning for St. Louis, but made a misstep and fell through a trestle and badly disfigured one side of his moustache; so he didn't go.
Iron Mountain Echo Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, Thursday, April 28, 1966, Page 8, John Amelung: "Former Resident Marks 100th Year." Newspaper Article: "100th Birthday," St. Louis Globe Democrat, Monday, March 21, 1966, Page 6A, Lower Left Corner of Page.
John Amelung observed his 100th birthday Sunday and confidently predicted he "will make it to 105."
The centenarian was on hand to greet some 300 relatives and friends who joined him in an open house celebration at his home, 219 East Holden St., Lemay.
Among the many gifts and hundreds of well wishes was a telegram from former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, whom Mr. Amelung voted for in 1952 and 1956.
  RETIRED IN 1936
Born and reared in Pilot Knob, Mo., Mr. Amelung retired as a foreman for the Pilot Knob Ore Co., in 1936 and came to live with his daughter, Mrs. John Klunk of the same address in 1943. He doesn't smoke, said his daughter, but he consistently chews tobacco and "drinks most anything, including wine, beer, whiskey and some milder beverages." He holds a pretty good conversation, Mrs. Klunk said, despite a sight and hearing impairment as the result of a stroke two years ago.
  FINE HEALTH
Considering this, and after surviving two sieges of double pneumonia since he turned 90, he's in fine health, she said. She explained there is a family history of longevity, noting that her uncle, Henry Amelung of Granite City, died 18 days short of his 100th birthday three years ago. Five of Mr. Amelung's seven children are living and make their home in St. Louis.
Original Letter in the possession of Grace (Amelung) Klunk:
 Edward H. Amelung
 Apr. 13-1958
325 South "H" Street Bakersfield, California
  Dear Brother John.
As I have not heard from you for some time on this day 1948 I am writing to hear how you are matriculating. We had a grand celebration on my birthday Mar 31st. We had 15 friends with us, Jack took us all down town for a chicken dinner. The party did not break up until 2 a.m. I do wish you could have been here to help us celebrate. Jack left for Pensacola, Fla on Apr 1st. He arrived there safe. He is working out estimates for large construction work. He expects to return home soon. What do you do to spend your time. My daughter Marguerite and family are all well she comes to see us most everyday. I was 90 years of age on Mar 31st. I have carried burdens hard to bear twas on my birthday that I said of worries great and small the things that never happen were the biggest of them all: Let me hear from you soon. All join me in sending love and best wishes.
 Brother Edw. H. Amelung.
As told to me by Grace Klunk, John Amelung always wore a black bow tie and had a little cup of whiskey every morning and he only liked to eat Pork. He must have been doing something right since he lived to be 100.
Grace remembers when her mother left in March 1922 to go to St. Louis, she took her older children with her so she had someone to fall back in if there were any problems. Left behind were the youngest, Fred, Grace and Hattie. Grace was 11 years old and Hattie only 5. Therefore, Grace helped raise Hattie.
Grace recalled how they would get everything ready for supper but couldn't cook anything until their father got home to light the wood stove. He didn't want them to try and light it by themselves in case of an accident.
