Chris was born to John Amelung and Lillie Mitchell on October 31, 1896 in Pilot Knob, Missouri. He was baptized in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on December 13, 1896 by Reverend Fuerbringer. His baptism sponsors were his grandfather Christian Amelung (of whom he was probably named after) and his aunt Minnie Amelung (William's wife).
Chris married Mary Louise Barnes, who was born on June 15, 1898 and died on January 15, 1955. He married again twice after Mary's death. His son, Roger, commented "He must have carried a wedding ring in his pocket" as he seemed to always be ready to get married. Chris and Mary lived in Pilot Knob, Mo. in a two story brick house which is still standing but not occupied. The top floor is now gone. The house is located on Bogy Street just two blocks from his uncle Herman's house and right across the creek from his brother, Clarence's home. While living in Pilot Knob, Chris worked in the mines.
Chris can be seen in the 1919 Mule Train photograph as a miner. He is smoking a cigar.
Christ. Amelung shows up in the 1935 St. Louis City Directory as a Shoeworker living at 3416 Neosho in St. Louis. In the 1947-48 St. Louis City Directory, Christ. J. Amelung is listed as a Fireman for Monsanto Chemical Co. and living at 3416 Taft Ave.
