 Sophie Amelunge died from burns. Sophie died on April 17, 1889. As was recorded in the Jackson (German) newspaper, Deutscher Volksfreund, Sophie died from serious burns at the age of 33. According to the Cape Girardeau County Death register, Sophie died on April 17, 1889 at 9:00 p.m. age 33 years, 2 months, and 19 days. Her cause of death was due to burns suffered when one-third of her clothes caught fire while outside in the yard washing. She was a single, servant girl who lived in Hubble Township and was born in Missouri. She was buried in a home graveyard on April 18, 1889. The German newspaper indicated that she suffered for 15 days.

 "Dress caught fire while doing laundry." A sad accident happened last Wednesday to Sophie Amelunke, daughter of the well respected farmer Henry Amelunke. Sophie was outside doing laundry, when her dress came in contact with the fire. She was engulfed in flames almost immediately and suffered such injuries, that it is doubtful whether or not she will survive.

 Miss. Sophie Amelunke, who as we reported earlier, suffered burn wounds, when her dress caught on fire, while doing laundry, died last Wednesday evening as a result of her injuries.
  The Missouri Cash Book in Jackson, Missouri also ran an article on April 11, 1889 regarding her accident. Miss Sophie Amelunke, daughter of Henry Amelunke who lives a mile and a half south-west of Gordonville, was very badly burned on Wednesday of last week. Her clothes caught fire while she was out in the yard washing. She was so badly injured that she may not recover.
