Alace E Watters, Age 17, daughter, single, born Missouri, father born England, mother born Missouri. Worked at Pittsburg Plate Glass at Crystal City, Missouri Employment Records: Per the Personnel Office at Pittsburgh Plate Glass at Crystal City, Missouri, Edwin O. Watters, born on May 20, 1865, began work there on May 10, 1907 and retired on November 13, 1931. They also list that he was naturalized as a citizen in 1895. According to Edwin's employment records at Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Crystal City, Missouri, Edwin O. Watters was employed there from May 10, 1907 until November 13, 1931 when he retired. They list his birthdate as May 20, 1865 and he entered the U.S. in 1882 at the age of 17. He became a naturalized citizen in 1895. The Census Records indicate that he was born in May 1862 in England, and that he immigrated to the United States in 1882. In some cases, the year of birth is simply not remembered very well as was the case with Louisa Amelung who died at age 16 according to her parents -- but in checking the church records, she was actually 1 year older. Iron County Register Newspaper, February 3, 1887, Volume XX, No. 30: Our young friend, Edwin Waters, after a long and severe spell of illness, is again convalescent, and we are all glad to see him up and on his "pins" again. In a postcard that Henry Amelung sent to his brother, Herman in Pilot Knob, dated January 26, 1911 from Granite City, Illinois, he states that, "Ed Waters is working here." Henry worked at Granite City Steel. Edwin and his family moved to Festus, Missouri and he worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass at Crystal City, Missouri. He would later help his nephew, Herman Amelung, Jr., son of Herman, get a job at the same company. There are still some descendants living in the Festus/Crystal City area. Kathleen Ferguson wrote me that Edwin was born and raised in Cornwall, England and came over to America when he was 16 with 1 or 2 brothers and 1 sister. She included a poem that Edwin wrote: While at watching in the nightime. With a little time to spare. Those words they came into my mind. That you are always near. For to me you were always kind. As kind as kind could be. And those few words I'm Going to Rhyme. Then you'll Remember me. For Dearest Parents you must think. As you are getting old. That I have got this made in Print. For you to Read all. On the 16th day of August. In Eighteen Eighty two. I left my dear old Folks at home. And went to Liverpool. From there to New York I did sail. Through waters high as mountains. I had good luck and seen no whales. With several good companions. From there we scattered all around. Some of us got parted. To seek employment underground. And Finally we got started. With Gods great care we toiled along. To seek our fortune Bravely. And Thank the Lord we were not alone. For he did treat us kindly. He gave us more than we deserved. For we were sinful men. For we were taught to Read his Word. And give up all to him. For this we know we have a soul. To Battle for against the wrong. And we must give up all in all. To him who sits upon the Throne. But with Gods help we'll Read his Word. And try out best to gain. That path which leads to heaven above. And praise his holy name. So Dearest Parents do not weep. For I am here not asleep. Some day we may other See. If not on Earth, in Heaven it may be. We send you this for we all know. That you'll receive it Kindly. Because it's from your Loving Ones. Edwin and his family Edwin O.
