Notes
a. Note:   William was born to Christian Amelung and Johanna Bodenstein on November 25, 1855 in Pilot Knob, Missouri. Since Iron County was not created until 1857, this was still part of St. Francois County.
William was most probably christened by a traveling Pastor at the nearest Lutheran Church as Wilhelm (Heinrich?) Amelung. The Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob was not built until 1861 so there was no church close to them at the time. I have been trying to check with the other Lutheran Churches in the nearest counties, but have had no luck in finding him yet. The 1870 Census records show that William was attending school at the age of 13.
On August 11, 1881, in Pilot Knob, Iron County, Missouri, William Amelung and Minnie Ahrens, daughter of Henry Ahrens, Sr. were married by H. Bremer, the Evangelist Minister of the Gospel. The Iron County Register listed their names in their August 11, 1881 issue indicating Marriage Licenses issued for week ending August 8th by the Circuit Court of Iron Count William worked as a Laborer at the Glass Factory. There are no records of a glass factory near Pilot Knob according to the Iron County Historical Society. There was a bottling company (now gone) which could be what he meant. His address is listed as Zeighler Street according to the 1900 census records. Later after he moved to Granite City, Illinois, where he worked as a Stationary Engineer in Refrigeration.
How did William Die? Well, it is said that he fell off a runaway horse. The Mercer Funeral Home in Granite City, Illinois (Thomas Mortuaries, Ltd.) and his death certificate show that he died of "Natural Causes, most probably Asthma." Asthma still shows up in the family today so it's hard to tell which is right. An inquest was held which determined natural causes. William died on May 13, 1920 in Granite City, Illinois and was buried on May 16, 1920 in the St. John Cemetery in Granite City. He was 64 years old.

Amelung, the boss machinist on the hill, has 31 air-drills to look after, and says that he expects to put 10 more on shortly; for they are going to commence laying an air-pipe to the shaft, and thence around the west side of the hill, where they have commenced two tunnels that are now in some distance. The ore is of the finest quality. It is very soft. you can crush some of the lumps to a fine powder, with your hand.
Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, MO, July 30, 1885, Vol. XIX, No. 3, "Court Notes" State vs. Henry Ahrens Jr.; slander. Trial had before court without a jury, and conviction, fine and costs, $26.85.
State vs. Henry Ahrens, Jr., Herman Held, and William Amelung; disturbance of the peace. Plea of guilty, and fine and costs assessed at $11.75 each. State vs. Frederick Schwab; disturbance of the peace. Trial by jury, and verdict of not guilty.
This case belongs to the above batch of cases and the other boys are now sorry, we supposed, that they did not fight it out, as Fritz did.
