Notes
a. Note:   Lillie was born on March 23, 1870/1872 in Missouri to John and Verna M. Mitchell. However, her confirmation records with the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob indicate her birthdate as March 23, 1872. Since she was under the age of 18 at the time of her marriage on April 10, 1888, a birthdate of March 1870 would have made her 18 years of age. I have to assume therefore that the March 23, 1872 date is correct. Lillie was confirmed in the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Pilot Knob on July 15, 1894, the same day as Mary (Schlueter) Amelung. I have a photograph of this occasion. Lillie also had a brother named George Mitchell who lived in Witchita, Missouri according to her daughter's obituary in 1936.
By March 1922, Lillie had left her husband, John, and moved to St. Louis with her older children. By 1927 they lived at 5832 S. Compton Avenue and she was listed in the 1927 city directory as the widow of John C. Amelung.
In the 1928 city directory, she had moved to 5910 Michigan Avenue, but still listed herself as a widow. There is no listing for her in the 1929 city directory nor any marriage record to show that she remarried. By 1930 she is listed on the census as the wife of William Hamel. In 1936, Lillie is listed on Hattie's death certificate as Lillie Hamlin of 3836A Ohio Street. This means that sometime between 1929 and 1930 she remarried. Her second marriage was to William A. Hamil in St. Louis. William was born on January 27, 1873 to John and Mary Hamil. William died on May 19, 1951. According to the 1910 Census Records, Lillie had 7 children with 5 still living. There were 2 more children born after 1910 which would give her 9 children. The first 7 children she had were boys.
St. Louis City Directory: Lillie C. Amelung, Widow of John Amelung, is listed in the 1927 and 1928 City Directories. She does not show up after 1928 nor before 1927. Lillie was not a Widow as John Amelung did not pass away until 1966.
Boarder: Per 1910 Census records, her 76 yr. old mother, Verna Mitchell, lived with them.
