AMELUNG, HATTIE -- Of 3836A Ohio Av., on Mon., Aug. 24, 1936, at 12:10 p.m., beloved daughter of John Amelung and Lillie Hamil (nee Mitchell) and dear sister of Grace Klunk (nee Amelung), Christian, Clarence, Roy, George, and Fred Amelung, and dear niece of Mrs. George Mitchell of Wichita, Kan., our dear sister-in-law and aunt, age 20 years. Funeral from Schumacher Funeral Home, 3013 Meramec St., Thurs., Aug. 27, at 2 p.m. to Sunset Burial Park. Schumacher-Smith Funeral Homes, 3013 Meramec Street, St. Louis, MO 63118. Grace Klunk has several letters that Hattie wrote to her father in Pilot Knob. Her father kept all the letters. - - - - - Hattie was the last child born to Johann Amelung and Lillie Mitchell. Born on June 25, 1916, in St. Louis, Missouri. Hattie died at a young age like her Aunt Louisa. Hattie grew up in Pilot Knob and later lived with her sister, Grace Klunk, in St. Louis. She worked as a saleswoman for awhile at F.W. Woolworth, Co., according to the 1936 city directory which also listed her address as r3836a Ohio Av. (which is her mother's residence). In August 1936, Hattie was living at 3724 Nebraska Street in St. Louis, Missouri, the home of her sister, Grace Klunk. It is here that she committed suicide. I was told two stories regarding Hattie's death. Her uncle Herman's family in Pilot Knob had been told that Hattie never got over how own parents divorce. Hattie was only five years old when her mother, Lillie, divorced her father and came to St. Louis in March 1922. But I also heard that she had Epilepsy and just couldn't take another seizure which she felt coming on. Most likely the Epilepsy developed from being hit by a car earlier. Unfortunately, they just didn't have the medicine or training they do today. On August 24, 1936, Hattie took her own life. Her death certificate indicates the cause of death as, "Gunshot wound of heart with internal hemorrhage, self inflicted at residence where suffering temporary mental aberrations." She was taken to City Hospital #1 with the time of death listed as 12:00 Noon. Hattie was buried at the Sunset Cemetery on August 27, 1936. According to the St. Louis Globe Democrat, Hattie was in ill health. Her sister, Grace, mentioned that Hattie had been hit by a car when she was younger. In a letter that Hattie sent to her father, dated March 15, 1933, she wrote about an operation she had, "you asked me how I feel well I feel pretty good and am getting over my operation fine," she continued to tell him that it healed up on the outside but hadn't healed up completely inside. Grace led me to believe that Hattie suffered from Epileptic seizures when I visited her. St. Louis Globe Democrat, Tuesday Morning, August 25, 1936, Section 2, Page 1B, 3rd Column, 3rd Article. WOMAN IN ILL HEALTH FATALLY SHOOTS SELF Miss Hattie Amelung, 20 years old, who was fatally shot in the abdomen yesterday at the home of her sister, Mrs. Grace Klunk, with whom she resided at 3724A Nebraska Avenue, died yesterday afternoon at the City Hospital. Mrs. Klunk, who was in the back yard with her husband, told police they rushed into the house when they heard the shot and found Miss Amelung lying on a couch in the living room with a revolver lying beside her. Mrs. Klunk said she and her husband had gone into the yard after asking Miss Amelung to prepare breakfast. Miss Amelung was unemployed and had been suffering from ill health for some time. Hattie's mother, Lillie Hamlin of 3836a Ohio Street, is listed as the informant for the information on Hattie's death certificate.
