  Dear Brother John.
As I have not heard from you for some time on this day 1958 I am writing to hear how you are matriculating. We had a grand celebration on my birthday Mar 31st. We had 15 friends with us, Jack took us all downtown for a chicken dinner. The party did not break up until 2 a.m. I do wish you could have been here to help us celebrate. Jack left for Pensacola, Fla on Apr 1st. He arrived there safe. He is working out estimates for large construction work. He expects to return home soon. What do you do to spend your time. My daughter Marguerite and family are all well she comes to see us most everyday. I was 90 years of age on Mar 31st. I have carried burdens hard to bear twas on my birthday that I said of worries great and small the things that never happen were the biggest of them all: Let me hear from you soon. All join me in sending love and best wishes.
 Brother Edw. H. Amelung.
Edward enjoyed visiting Pilot Knob, Missouri every fall to go turkey hunting with his brother Herman. They would use a team and wagon to go out to camp and turkey hunt with George Allers and Alfred "Farmer" Schwab. When he wasn't visiting Pilot Knob, Edward worked for Prudential Life Insurance and traveled a lot so he wasn't afraid of making the long drive from California. Edward would drive his Packard all the way from Bakersfield, California by himself as his wife had no desire to come.
Maggie Amelung remembers a visit to Edward's house in Bakersfield and recalls that he grew grapes in his front yard. And Patricia remembers that when her grandfather got too old to drive, he'd get dressed up in a suit, tie and hat and would walk or take the bus to the grocery store every day. He smoked cigars and had a drink once a year. In a letter written by Hattie Amelung dated January 27, 1931 to her father John, she talks of a visit of her Uncle Ed to Pilot Knob ". . . I wish I could see Uncle Ed. I don't think I ever saw him and if I did I don't remember him."
In 1918, when his mother passed away, he is listed in the obituary as living in Indianapolis. He had chose to retire in 1922 to Bakersfield due to his allergies (Asthma) which still show up in the family today.
While visiting the newspaper, probably to supply information regarding his mother's obituary, the newspaper also ran an article regarding a recent promotion of Ed H. Amelung:
Iron County Register Newspaper, Ironton, Missouri, Thursday, December 12, 1918, Volume LII, No. 28, 2nd Column, "Local Brevities."
Ed H. Amelung of Indianapolis, Indiana and his brother Henry of Granite City, Illinois were callers at the REGISTER office last Saturday. Ed has mounted another round on the Prudential ladder and has been summoned to Cincinnati, Ohio to take charge of the Prudential Life Insurance Company's business there. He has been in the employ of the Prudential about 20 years, having had charge of the agencies at New Albany, Indiana, Saginaw, Michigan and Indianapolis, Indiana. Every change he has made has been a promotion. We congratulate him.
Andrew Amelung can remember his uncle always saying, "Who's the man? (What man?) "The man who put C in the can." Ed would give all his nephews and nieces rides in his big car. Ed was able to tell a good joke and make people laugh which helped him greatly with his work in the insurance business. Edward was married twice and had children by both wives. First to Alice Boss then to Nellie Cook. Not much can be found on his first wife nor his children by her.
Edward died on March 14, 1960 in Bakersfield, Kern County, California at 91 years of age. He went to sleep and just didn't wake up. His death certificate indicated that he worked for Prudential life insurance for 30 years, resided in California for 32 years of which the last 6 years were spent in Bakersfield. He was interred in the Hollywood Cemetery on March 17, 1960 in Corridor "G" in the Abbey of the Psalms Mausoleum next to his wife, Nell. In this cemetery are buried several movie stars of which a few are Douglas Fairbanks, Sr., Rudolph Valentino, and Tyrone Power.
