a. Note:   My mom remembers her uncles well and said that Andrew and Bill were both Irwins and definately looked alike, but Bill went by Thornton and Andrew by Irwin. Their mother, Nancy, was not married when they were born. In the Social Security applications and claims index, Drew Irwin is listed as being the father of William Wesley Thornton. Drew's mother, Elizabeth, was a midwife and delivered Nancy's three children by Drew.

 Funeral services for William W. Thornton, 96 , Leslie, will be held Thursday, May 14, 1992, at Nieburg-Vitt,Thiebes Funeral Home, Pacific. Burial will be in the Pacific City Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Wednesday.
  Mr. Thornton, former Pacific resident, died Monday, May 11, at Sunset Nursing Center in Union.
  He is survived by nine children, Frieda Bandy and husband Noble, Leslie, Thelma Vaughn and husband Al, Rocky Mount, Clyde Thornton and wife Nadean, Higbee, Kathleen Branson and husband Junior, Doral Thornton and wife Pat, and Gary Thornton and wife Joy, and James Thornton and wife Kathy, all of Marthasville; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Stella Luttrell, Stanton, and Marcella Moege, Yates Center, Kansas; two brothers, Lee Ash, Pacific and Everett Ash, Villa Ridge; other relatives and many friends.
  Memorials to charity of choice are preferred.
  The Missourian Newspaper, Washington, Missouri William Wesley Thornton, 96, Leslie, formerly of Pacific, died at Sunset Nursing Center in Union on Monday, May 11, 1992. He was born in Brumley, Mo., the son of Nancy Thornton Ash, and stepson of Green Berry Ash.
  He was married to Mary Elizabeth Alexander on July 6, 1919, in Venus, Mo. To this union 11 children were born, nine of whom survive; Freda Bandy and husband Noble, Leslie, Thelma Vaughn and husband Al, Rocky Mount, Clyde Thornton and wife Nadean, Higbee, Kathleen Branson and husband Junior, Darl Thornton and wife Pat, and Gary Thornton, all of Pacific, Ruth Ward, Denver, Colorado, Paul Thornton and wife Joy, and James Thornton and wife Kathy, all of Marthasville; 23 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Stella Luttrell, Stanton, and Marcella Moege, Yates Center, Kansas; two brothers, Lee Ash, Pacific and Everett Ash, Villa Ridge; other relatives and many friends.
  Mr. Thornton served in WW I; entering the U.S. Army on May 29,1918. He was honorably discharged on January 7,1919. In his early years, he was a farmer. He retired from the Frisco Railroad after many years of service. He was a faithful member of the Assembly of God Church, Pacific.
  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on January 13,1989; his two sons, Staff Sgt. Claude O. Thornton and Frank C. Thornton during WWII; his parents; one sister; three brothers; and three grandchildren.
  Funeral services were held Thursday, May 14, 1992, at Nieburg-Vitt, Thiebes Funeral Home, Pacific, with Rev. Donald Helton officiating. Interment was in the Pacific City Cemetery.
