Notes
a. Note:   Notes recorded in 2000 diary: "My childhood. Whiteabbey coastguard houses rent 6 shillings 1 penny per week, no water in the house - communal tap for 6 houses. Father bought a second-hand Singer 12 car in 1934 from one of the local well-to-do. We were taken all round Ireland & I remeber going via the west coast - Sligo / Galway etc to the relatives in the south. Left Whiteabbey for Belfast when I was 12 years old - elemntary school until 14 then 4 years at Connell's Institute in Belfast centre (actually at the central junction). One good point for Dad was he used to say "Educate the girls & then they are unlikely to marry beneath them!" He had a good deal of common sense."
