a. Note:   Redburge de Francie After the assassination of King Cynewulf, Egbert's relative, Beothric was elected king of Wessex in 786, but Egbert considered himself more entitled to the throne. He therefore had to flee to France, which was then ruled by Emperor Charlemagne, and served a time in his army.
  During his stay in France he married Redburga, who was French princess - by someone referred to as the sister of Charlemagne.
 Redburga and Egbert had two sons and a daughter.
