Note: Eldon Goedeke, age 87 passed away at 1:20 pm, Sunday December 7, 2014 at Via Christi Hospital Pittsburg, KS following an illness.
Eldon was born June 16, 1927 in Girard KS to Herman and Inez (Head) Goedeke. He attended Abel Grade School, Pittsburg, KS and graduated from McCune High School in 1944.
He farmed his parents place and another 40 acres from P & M Coal Co. His father worked for P & M and Eldon began working there in 1947. They were known as Old Dutch and Young Dutch. Eldon retired June 16, 1989.
He married Winona Allen on March 12, 1949 at Columbus, KS. They bought 80 acres in Labette County, KS in 1960. Fifty years later, they sold their farm and moved to rural Girard, KS.
Eldon was president of the UMWA Local 14 district 12 for 21 years retiring in 2011. He was also a member of Big Brutus and Cherokee County Genealogy. He had been a 4H Project Leader; Good Sam Camping Club, a traveling Pitch card club, and had been a volunteer at the annual Cherokee County Fair. He had a large collection of metal farm toys.
He is survived by his wife, Winona; 2 daughters, Sharon (husband, Ron) Strahan, and Vickie Johnson; 2 sons, Darrel (wife, Janis) Goedeke, and Dale (wife, Janet) Goedeke; 11 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Sheldon Ray Goedeke, his parents, 2 brothers, Ernest (as an infant) and Keith Goedeke.
Burial in McCune Cemetery, McCune, KS.
