Notes
a. Note:   James Madison Downs wrote the following in a letter to unknown recepient
(probably Ada Myrtle Mace, his niece) concerning his early years with h
father David Downs and their family in Kentucky and Tennessee:
"...steamboat landing at the point where the line reaches the Tennesse
It was called Dildays (transciber Norman Seal not sure of spelling)
Landing. Father's farm was 3/4 miles up the river from the landing, and
of (our) house was about a half mile inland from the river bank."
"Father was born and grew up in Trigg County, Kentucky. His home was
between the Cumberland and the Tennessee Rivers. I was born there too,
and was two years old when we moved to Tennessee in 1870."
"Your letter awakened many, many memories of that old home and not a
them are happy memories - we knew sorrow as well as happiness - my moth
and my brother Sam died there."
"Our last year in Tennessee we lived at Paris Landing. That is one mile
below where the Big Sandy flows into the Tennessee. Your maternal
grandmother (if letter was to Myrtle, this would be Nellie Winscott) was
born and grew up on the Big Sandy. I remember going to see her old home."
Helen Seal says that she believes David's fourth wife was named Jennie
Penny. She said this marriage for David did not work out and believes
they did not stay together very long. David was living in the Willow
Springs, MO area at this time.
