Note: N108 Notice of death in Kington Freeman, May 11, 1927: David Hornbeck, who has been employed at Lake Mohonk for several years, died May 2. Mr. Hornbeck was 71 years old and is survived by his wife and one daughter. According to an article in the Orange Co. Independent, he was trampled and kicked to death by a team of horses that had been frightened by a dynamite blast. There seems to be no report of the incident in the New Paltz paper, the Kingston paper, or the Poughkeepsie paper. Ellenville Journal, Thursday, September 15, 1927 ÒAccord Children Are Beneficiaries in Odd Insurance CaseÓ This article describes how Sarah Hornbeck hired a lawyer to plead her case against MohonkÕs insurance company on behalf of her grandchildren. David was Òfatally kicked by a fractious horseÓ while in the employ of the Mohonk Hotel. She won the case and the company was instructed to pay for the raising of the grandchildren until the youngest turned 18.
